The New Bedford Bay Sox' Season Comes to an End

New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The New Bedford Bay Sox' 2016 season came to an end at Fitch Senior High School in Groton, CT, as they dropped the decisive game of their three-game playoff series by a score of 6-3 on Friday night.

Mystic, who had the best offense in the NECBL this season, used the long ball once again to victimize the Bay Sox, hitting two homers in the middle part of the game to seal the clinching victory. Jakob Goldfarb (Oregon) blasted his own homer for the Bay Sox, who squeaked in to the playoffs by winning a play-in game on Tuesday and still pushed the top team in the Southern Division (and the defending Southern champs) to the limit.

The Schooners jumped out early on New Bedford starter Dylan Collett (St. Leo), grabbing two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. After getting Richard Slenker to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out of the frame, Collett allowed a single to center by Martin Figueroa that fell in front of T.J. Dixon (Samford), as the speedy outfielder was playing deep in front of the short fences at Fitch High School. Chase Lunceford drove in both runners with an RBI double to right field, as Ryan Baldwin (Barry) attempted to make a diving catch but came up short.

Collett calmed down in the second, striking out the side, as all three Schooners' hitters sat down after looking at nasty third strike pitches. He had some help from all three outfielders in the third to retire the side in order yet again, as Dixon made a terrific running catch on a ball sent to the fence by leadoff hitter Nick Mascelli. Ryan Ramiz belted a double to the fence in right, but Baldwin made a perfect throw to Connor Hoover (North Georgia), who then gunned down Ramiz trying to stretch the double into a triple. Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut State) made an acrobatic catch for the third out, as he barely missed having a violent collision with Hoover on the short fly ball.

After Mystic starter Doug Domnarski retired the first 10 Bay Sox batters, New Bedford broke through for their first hits and first runs of the game in the top of the fourth. Andrew Penner (Los Angeles Valley) struck a sharp single to center, and moved up a base with a free pass on four pitches taken by Goldfarb. The two Sox runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Robbie Doring (Dayton) drove in Penner with a bloop single that landed just over the head of Slenker at first. Alex Mata, who is Collett's teammate at St. Leo, drove in the tying run on an infield single deep in the hole at short.

Mystic wasted little time in regaining the lead, as Figueroa launched his second home run of the three-game series to give the Schooners a 3-2 advantage. The Sox cut down another runner trying to take three bases for the first out of the fourth, as Baldwin and Hoover combined yet again to throw out Lunceford on a double down the right field line.

The bottom of the Mystic lineup struck to pad their lead in the fifth, with catcher Alex LeFevre driving a two-run homer deep to left field to give the Schooners a 5-2 lead. Collett was removed from the game after the dinger, and replaced by Daniel Southerland (Wheaton). Collett's final line was four innings, five runs, seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.

New Bedford chipped away at the three-run deficit in the sixth, as Goldfarb connected on his first homer of the playoffs and fourth overall to make it 5-3. Mystic countered in the bottom of the inning, as Lunceford doubled to start the inning, and scored on what should have been an inning-ending double play, as Hoover's throw to first got away from him.

The Bay Sox had two base hits in the seventh inning, but made the third out at third base. Hoover singled with one out, and then made an overaggressive decision to attempt to go from first to third on a flare single by Dixon to left field, getting thrown out easily. The Bay Sox could have had two runners on for the top of their order if not for that base-running mistake.

After Southerland allowed a one-out walk to Ramiz in the seventh, he was replaced by Nick Miceli (Wesleyan). He retired Slenker on a pop out to short, and the Bay Sox cut down Ramiz on a steal attempt thanks to a perfect throw behind the plate from Penner.

New Bedford also had two baserunners in the eighth inning, as Penner walked and Goldfarb singled. Penner was gunned down at second base on a questionable call, as he had to delay his march to second to see if Goldfarb's hit would be caught in right field.
