Sanford erases 8-run deficit to win in extras, highlighting busy Saturday in the NECBL!
Sanford Mainers 10 - Winnipesaukee Muskrats 9
W - Brady Afthim 2-0 (Connecticut): 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 K
L - Ryan Dee 1-1 (Hartford): 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, N.H. - The Sanford Mainers (7-10) defeated the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (7-8) in an extra inning, comeback victory.
All seemed bleak for the Mainers when they were down 9-1 in the third inning. It would have to take a lot of chipping away to make up for the deficit.
It started with a 2-run single by Alex Knapp (George Mason) in the top of the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, the bases were loaded for Knapp. He hit a ball to Sanford's second baseman, who made an error and allowed two runs to score. Then, Quinn McDaniel (Maine Orono) hit an RBI single to make it 9-6 in the Muskrats' favor. Next, Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) hit a sacrifice fly.
However, Winnipesaukee did not allow a run in the seventh and eighth inning, which set up for a potential victory in the ninth inning. Sanford's David Bermudez (Manhattan), Aidan Kane (Delaware), and MJ Lucas (North Carolina Asheville) started the inning by reaching base and Kevin Skagerlind (UMass Amherst) drove Bermudez in on a single to make it 9-8. After a lineout, McDaniel tied the game with an RBI walk. The game then went to extra innings.
After neither team scored in the 10th, MJ Lucas scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-9. Sanford's Brady Afthim did everything necessary to keep the automatic runner from scoring in the 10th and 11th innings. All six of his outs were strikeouts, and he earned his second victory of the year.
The Mainers and Muskrats will be playing each other again today at 6:30 p.m., with this game being at Sanford.
