The NECBL Daily Rundown - June 9th, 2022

June 10, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

Thursday's game lineup was highlighted by Keene's 19-run explosion and Martha's Vineyard's shutout victory.

Keene Swamp Bats 19 - Winnipesaukee Muskrats 4

W - Vincent Spizzoucco 1-0 (Central Connecticut State): 6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

L - Griffin Young 0-1 (Northeastern): 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.

Alumni Field in Keene, N.H. - The Keene Swamp Bats (2-0) continue their dominance to remain undefeated following a huge 19-4 win over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (1-1)

Scoreless through the first two innings, the Swamp Bats brought the heat after Spizzoucco threw a perfect third inning, leading into the first run of the night following a double to center field by infielder Jaden Brown (Texas Arlington), and another double by center fielder Matt Almonte (Pace) to bring Brown home for the score, 1-0.

As Spizzoucco produced two more innings without hits by the Muskrats, the Swamp Bats exploded with seven runs following a single by second baseman Dan Corvino (Central Connecticut State) that brought home infielder Colin Wetterau (St Johns), and two home runs that brought in a total of six runners. The homers were hit by designated hitter Jackson Ross (Florida Atlantic) and infielder Garrett Rice (Missouri Columbia) with additional runs by Brown, Covino, right fielder Carter Mathison (Indiana), and third baseman Tony Santa Maria (Rutgers New Brunswick), to bump the score to a 8-0 lead.

Keene kept up their momentum in the following inning with another three runs by Ross, Mathison, and left fielder Zack Whitacre, but the Muskrats finally gained some ground after a four-run performance in the top of the seventh with scores by left fielder Tyler Grodell (Mt St Mary's), short stop Patrick Roche (Boston College), designated hitter Michael Borrelli (St Anselm), and third baseman Brady Day (Kansas State), to cut the deficit 11-4.

The Muskrats could not hold the Swamp Bats, however, as they quickly responded with another eight-run effort by a two-run homer by Ross and Mathison hitting a dinger himself with Ross, Whitacre, and Covino getting two runs each and Santa Maria and Rice with one run apiece capping off the night to end the game 19-4.

The Swamp Bats take on the Mystic Schooners (1-1) for their first away game at 6:30pm as the Muskrats host the undefeated Vermont Mountaineers (2-0) for their debut home game at 6pm.

Bristol Blues 2 - Danbury Westerners 1

W - Colin McVeigh 1-0 (Fairfield): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

L - Renn Lints 1-1 (Bucknell): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER (1 R), 3 BB, 3 K.

Muzzey Field Park in Bristol, Conn - The Bristol Blues (2-1) held off the previously undefeated Danbury Westerners (2-1) in a 2-1 victory.

Without any runs by both teams in the first inning, the Westerners took an early lead after Henry Strmecki (Dayton) hit a single, advanced to third on a single, and went in for the score from a sacrifice fly by Colby Canales (Pacific). Following the Blues stalling out the Westerners in the top of the third, Cal Parrillo (RIC) hit a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and walked in for the Blues' first run of the night from a double by Joseph Rios (Central Connecticut State). Parrillo would then carry the momentum to bat in the tie-breaking score that led Jack Lynch (Manhattan) home for a 2-1 score following an advance to first by error and second with a walk. After some back-and-forth gameplay between both teams, the match would conclude with the Blues taking the win over the Westerners, 2-1.

The Blues remain home to host the Sanford Mainers (0-2) tomorrow at 6:30pm while the Westerners are off tomorrow to prepare for their home matchup against the Mystic Schooners (1-1) at 6:30pm on Saturday.

Valley Blue Sox 5 - North Adams SteepleCats 4

W - Jacob Terwilliger 1-0 (Bucknell): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

L - Randy Reyes 0-1 (Central Connecticut): 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke, MA - The Valley Blue Sox (2-1) got over .500 in a comeback, walk-off, extra inning victory over the North Adams SteepleCats (0-3).

After their first two batters were retired quickly, the SteepleCats started a two-out rally by loading the bases on two hit batsmen and a walk. They put a run on the board on a passed ball, then a Tyler Epstein (Nova Southeastern) single on a line drive to right-center field drove in the next two. North Adams was able to keep a comfortable lead thanks to Johnnie Valdez's (Golden West) quality performance on the mound. He did not allow a base runner in his first three frames, then induced a ground ball double play in each of the next three innings to halt any Blue Sox rallies.

The Blue Sox got their offense going in the eighth inning, starting with a Damaurys Rodriguez solo home run over the right-center field wall to make it 4-2 in North Adams' favor. Then, Blaze Fadio (Lafayette) walked and came around to score while the next at-bat was still going on after advancing to second on a wild pitch, to third on a balk, then to home on another wild pitch. Jacob Terwilliger eventually scored in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the game up.

The game went into extra innings, which put a runner on second base to start the inning for each team. In the top of the tenth, Connor Bailey (Xavier) struck out the side and did not allow the SteepleCats to score. In the bottom half of the inning, Randy Reyes kept the game alive without allowing Valley to score.

Terwilliger then came in to pitch for the Blue Sox and struck out his first two batters, then induced a ground ball to first base for the third out.

After a leadoff flyout in the bottom of the 11th inning, Daniel Melnick (Quinnipiac) hit a hard ground ball through the middle, which drove in Lucas DiLuca (Eastern Illinois) for a Blue Sox walk-off victory.

North Adams will remain on the road today for a matchup with the Ocean State Waves at 6:30 p.m. Valley will head to Newport to face the Gulls at 6:35 p.m. today.

Martha's Vineyard Sharks 6 - Ocean State Waves 0

W - James Shashin 1-0 (San Diego): 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

L - Cameron Knox 0-1 (Fordham): 3.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Vineyard Baseball Park in Oak Bluffs, Mass - The Martha's Vineyard Sharks (2-1) were one strike away from the NECBL season's second no-hitter in a 6-0 victory over the Ocean State Waves (0-1).

After three hitless innings and five strikeouts from their starting pitcher Adam Stone (Harvard), the Sharks found their groove offensively. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the third. Then, Henry Wallen delivered with a 2-run single through the right side to put the first runs of the game on the board. Marcus Franco (Nova Southeastern) followed that up with an RBI double to make it 3-0. In the next inning, Vineyard continued to rally when it scored on an errant throw to first with a man on second base and when Thomas Bramley hit an RBI double.

The Sharks provided a good performance with the bats, but it was not completely necessary for the victory. After Stone came out of the game, James Sashin threw three hitless innings with five strikeouts the same way Stone did. Next, JD McCracken (Tennessee) toed the rubber for Vineyard, and went 2.2 more hitless innings. However, with a 2-2 count, Ocean State's Khyree Miller (Winthrop) lined a double into left-center field to spoil the Sharks' no-hitter. Yet, Vineyard secured the victory two pitches later when they nabbed a base runner trying to score on a wild pitch.

Ocean State will head back home today for a matchup with North Adams at 6:30 p.m. The Sharks have the day off today, but will go to North Adams tomorrow to face the SteepleCats.
