The Monday After: SIFL Teams Taking Big Early Leads

May 5, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release

Never mind the fact that the Texas Pirates ended Saturday's game by giving up the final 43 points to the Louisiana Swashbucklers. For one brief moment, the Pirates were making some minor Southern Indoor Football League history.

When Texas turned a 7-0 deficit into a 14-7 first quarter lead, it was the SIFL's first lead change.

In addition to Louisiana's 81-0 blasting of Florida, the play for most of the first three weeks has been catch-up. In each case, the winning team has scored the first 13 points and over 20 in three of the four games.

So, are we a slow-starting league? In defense, Austin cut a 20-0 deficit to 30-29 while Houma has deficits of 39-9 and 23-0 down to within two scores.

``Everything will even out,'' said Commissioner Dan J. Blum "We have had some exciting games the first three weeks of the season, and it will heat up even more on May 9 when Louisiana visits Austin and on May 16 when Acadiana plays at Louisiana."

O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O: Holding a team scoreless for a quarter has been considered a badge of honor for any indoor football team's defense. The Swashbucklers' defense now have seven scoreless quarters after the first two weeks of play.

THE ONE ADVANTAGE OF RIDING THE BUS: With LA's Freddie Harrison and Sammy Knight this week's nominees for the Vidswap.com Player Of The Week award, it's assured that a playing from a visiting team gets the award. Harrison picked up his second offensive game MVP award Saturday at Texas, joining Austin DL Kevin Earvine as a two-time game MVP winner.

Fans can vote for the Player of The Week until 11:59 pm CST.

Fans have already made their choice known for the name of the SIFL's E-newsletter. "Between the Walls" grabbed up a clear 57 percent of the vote. Sadly, no write-in votes from the Colbert Nation were received. The E-newsletter is distributed each Thursday.

WEEK 4: Call it set-up week for the SIFL. If Louisiana (2-0) can pick up the road win at Austin (1-2) and Acadiana (2-0) holds off Houma, it sets the stage for the big game Blum mentioned next week in Lake Charles between the Bucs and Mudbugs
