
The Captain Returns for 2011-12 Season

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today that the team has re-signed forward Matt Scherer. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Scherer, 29, registered a career-high 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points in 58 games for the Stingrays last season and one goal in four Kelly Cup playoff contests.
"Signing Matt was one of our top priorities this offseason," said Carbery. "His compete level and leadership skills are exceptional and we are very excited to have him back for the 2011-12 season."
Since joining the Stingrays as a rookie for the 2007-08 campaign, the Seattle, Washington native recorded 107 points (57g, 50a) in 247 games and 12 goals and six assists for 18 points in 45 postseason games. On January 7, 2010, Scherer became the seventh team captain in Stingrays history. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot, 195-pound forward spent four years at the University of Connecticut compiling 105 points (62g, 43a) in 138 NCAA games. Scherer also spent four seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL) tallying 30 goals and 20 assists for 50 points in 164 games for Sioux City and Tri-City.
