Texas Tornado News Release
Frisco, TX (10/11/10) - Texas Tornado defenseman #29 Ralfs Freibergs has been named as the NAHL South Division Player of the Week. This marks the second time this season a Tornado player has been honored. Tornado forward #19 Rock Einersen, the NAHL's leading scorer, was honored with the same award back on September 20th.
On Friday, the Riga, Latvia native posted an assist on the game-tying power play goal in a 3-2 win at home over the Amarillo Bulls. The next night in Amarillo, the 19-year-old Freibergs posted a career-high and an NAHL season-high five assists in an 8-4 win over the Bulls, snapping their 6-game home winning streak. Freibergs assisted on Texas' first five goals of the night, including the game-winner.
For the season, Freibergs leads the NAHL in assists with 14 and power play assists with 8. He also leads all NAHL defensemen in scoring with 15 points this season. Texas Tornado Head Coach Tony Curtale said the following: "I am happy to see Ralfs get this recognition because he has overcome a lot of barriers since arriving late last season from Latvia. He has great vision and has the ability to create offense for his teammates. I believe he is one of the most skilled defensemen in the NAHL and will play at a very high level one day."
