Teams Seek Future Stars in 2007 MLS SuperDraft
Published on January 5, 2007 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Friday, January 5, 2007) - Who will be the next impact player in Major League Soccer? Will he be a No. 1 overall pick like Freddy Adu, a late first-rounder like Clint Dempsey, or a fourth-round surprise like 2006 Gatorade MLS Rookie of the Year Jonathan Bornstein?
Next Friday, the coaches and general managers of the 13 MLS clubs will attempt to find gems in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. The event begins at 12 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 12 at the Indianapolis Convention Center and the first hour will be televised live on ESPN2. The remainder of the draft, which consists of four rounds of 13 picks each, will be streamed live on www.MLSnet.com, the League's official Web site.
For the fifth consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) convention. Thousands of youth soccer coaches from across the country will descend on Indianapolis and next Friday many will watch from the draft floor as some of their protégés are chosen by the professional ranks.
The SuperDraft comes to Indianapolis for the first time. The historic city is the 12th largest in the United States, and as the Crossroads of America, it is an ideal location for the first major event of Major League Soccer's 12th season.
Major League Soccer's annual amateur player draft features the finest collegiate and youth soccer prospects in the United States. The majority of draft prospects are graduating college seniors from NCAA schools. Others come from Generation adidas, a joint program between MLS and adidas that is dedicated to developing exceptional domestic talent in a professional environment. Each year, a handful of top domestic underclassmen and youth national team soccer players are signed to the league and placed in the SuperDraft through this program. This year's class of Generation adidas players will be announced next week.
The MLS SuperDraft is open to the public at no charge, and fans are invited to attend, however seating is limited, and fans are encouraged to arrive early. Media members seeking credentials should e-mail stephen.rodriguez@mlsnet.com with the names, titles, and draft day functions of those who will cover the event.
