MONCTON, Wednesday, November 23, 2005 (QMJHL) - The second game of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge was played tonight in front of 5709 fans at Moncton Coliseum as the QMJHL team defeated the Russian Selects by the score of 6-4.
Russian defenceman Ivan Amakhin opened the scoring at 10:06 of the first period with a quick wrist shot that beat goaltender Julien Ellis, which put the Russian Selects in the driver's seat. The QMJHL team tied the game up 1-1 thanks to a nifty cross-ice pass from Marc-André Gragnani which enabled David Desharnais to get his first goal of the series.
The second goal of the game came on a shot by Guillaume Latendresse, his fourth of the two-game series, assisted by his brother, Olivier, near the midpoint of the second period. But, the Russians came back with a powerplay goal from forward Alexander Mayer with just under four minutes left in the second frame.
In the opening minute of the third period, Kristopher Letang scored for the QMJHL squad. Nevertheless, the lead was short-lived as Alexander Goroshansky tied it up seconds later with a high wrist shot. Then, Guillaume Latendresse beat goaltender Semen Varlamov followed closely by a Ryan Hillier shot that put the QMJHL team up for good.
Goaltender Julien Ellis was stellar in the win, but had to leave the game after receiving a slapshot to the head. He left the game under his own power and without any serious injury. Back-up goalie Pier-Olivier Pelletier came on to finish the game.
The player of the game for Russian was defenceman Ivan Amakhin while Guillaume Latendresse won the award on the QMJHL side for the second time in as many games.
Head Coach Clément Jodoin was very satisfied with his team's performance, but also extended his congratulations to the Russian players: "You have to give a lot of credit to our opponents. They gave us a run; they never let up throughout the game even though they experienced very difficult traveling arrangements due to bad weather conditions. They deserve a lot of respect."
The next game of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge is tomorrow night in Kitchener as the Russians begin a two-game series against the OHL All-Stars.
