The Columbus Wardogs and Team Down Under had a chance to size each other up for the first time Thursday afternoon when they met at a press conference at Bama Lanes in Phenix City, AL.

Several distinguished guests took to the podium during the event to officially welcome Team Down Under to town, including Phenix City Mayor Sonny Coulter.

"We open our doors and hearts to you," said Mayor Coulter as he presented Team Down Under head coach Mike Sea a key to the city. "Thank you for being here and I look forward to the game on Sunday."

Columbus Mayor Bob Poydasheff also presented Team Down Under with a key to the city, and he expressed appreciation for the strong alliance the United States and Australia has shared over the years.

"You are all great people," said Mayor Poydasheff. "I fought with you in Vietnam and you produce some great soldiers. You are great friends of America. Good luck to you this Sunday."

Upon being welcomed to town by the mayors, a humbled Mike Sea presented each mayor with some Australian souvenirs, including a plaque commemorating the event.

"This community has opened their hearts and souls to us and for that we are very grateful," commented Sea. "It is an honor and pleasure to play these guys."

"Not that we're going to take it easy after traveling so far," he quickly added.

Following the press conference, Team Down Under held their first practice. They practiced outdoors under bright sunshine with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees.

"We got more achieved than expected," Coach Sea said. "We are well on our way."

Following practice the team retuned to Bama Lanes to try their hands at bowling. For many members of Team Down Under, it was a first-time experience.

"It seems like a good way to clear the mind," remarked FB/LB Peter Steve, who was bowling for the first time in his life.

"I feel happy when I get a strike, but the happiness quickly turns to tears when the ball goes in the gutter," he quipped.

On Friday, Team Down Under and the Wardogs visit Fort Benning where they will take part in a tank simulation battle.

Kickoff for Freedom Bowl II is 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at the Columbus Civic Center. Tickets for the game are available at any Ticketmaster outlet including the Columbus Civic Center or by calling (706) 494-8330. Tickets are $10.00 each with proceeds benefiting The United Way of Chattahoochee Valley.
