Tampa Bay's Beamon Named AFL Pulse Player of the Week

CHICAGO - Tampa Bay Storm linebacker Rodney Beamon has been named the AFL Pulse Player of the Week for his recent philanthropic efforts.
Beamon (6-2, 285, Tennessee-Chattanooga), who is in his second season in the AFL and with the Storm, recently participated in an event for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick's also hosts its signature head-shaving events where "shavees" collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and to raise money for lifesaving research.
"We went and we were cheering on the people who were participating and shaving their heads," Beamon said. "I had the opportunity to have my little brother here with me and he has long hair and we got him to donate his hair to charity."
In addition, Beamon has also volunteered as a coach at Lehigh Senior High school in Lehigh Acres, Florida.
"I had the opportunity to help coach the defensive line at Lehigh High School and also share some of my experiences that got me to where I am today," Beamon said. "It's important for professional athletes to give back, because they are in a position where people look up to them and when people see them giving back and doing positive things it encourages other people to help out as well."
Community service is something Beamon enjoys doing because it provides the opportunity to steer others in the right direction.
"For me, I share my story to inspire others, because you may be in a tough situation now but you can still push through and achieve your dreams," Beamon said.
The Tampa Bay Storm (3-3) will host the Spokane Shock (3-2) in the "NET10 Wireless Arena Football Saturday" matchup on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
The AFL Pulse Player of the Week is awarded in recognition of commitment to community service. The AFL Pulse Al Lucas Hero of the Year will be awarded to one player at the end of the 2014 season.
