Tampa Bats Go Cold in Shutout Loss

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (29-31) suffered their sixth shutout of the season as the Charlotte Stone Crabs (29-29) cruised to a 5-0 win on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Southpaw Miguel Sulbaran pitched a solid five shutout innings before departing in the sixth. Sulbaran scattered six hits and a walk while tallying a season-high eight strikeouts in the no-decision.

Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli made his first rehab appearance with the Tampa Yankees. Cervelli went 0-for-3 with three groundouts before Trent Garrison replaced him at catcher in the eighth. Cervelli is currently on the 60-day disabled list after suffering a strained hamstring on April 13th.

The game remained scoreless until the Stone Crabs broke the tie in the sixth.

With one out, Kes Carter singled off of Tampa reliever Brett Gerritse (2-3). Marty Gantt then chase Carter home with an RBI triple to right-center, giving Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

RHP Chris Smith made his Tampa Yankees debut in the seventh. Leonardo Reginatto greeted him with a single and Patrick Leonard followed by homering to left field as the Stone Crabs took a 3-0 advantage.

Smith allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out two in his first appearance since being promoted from low-A Charleston.

Kyle Haynes entered the game for Tampa in the eight and surrendered a run. With Julian Ridings on third and Reginatto at the plate, Tommy Coyle stole second. Jose Toussen bobbled the catch at second base, allowing Ridings to score from third.

Charlotte added another run against Haynes in the ninth as Justin O'Conner score from third on another fielding error by Toussen. With O'Conner at second and Tyler Goeddel at first, Gantt hit a double-play ball to shortstop. Toussen's throw to first skipped passed Greg Bird at first and bounced into the stands, allowing O'Conner to score.

LHP Blake Snell (1-1) earned his first high-A win after tossing six shutout frames for the Stone Crabs. Snell allowed four hits and a walk, striking out three.

Luis Cabrera earned his first save for Charlotte. The righty pitched three scoreless frames, scattering four hits and striking out three.

The series continues on Friday at 7:00 p.m. when RHP Rafael De Paula (1-3, 4.18 ERA) takes the hill for the Yankees. RHP Austin Pruitt (3-1, 4.56 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Stone Crabs.
