Meet MAINEiacs Academic Advisor, Roger LaChapelle

You are the Academic Advisor for the players. What does that job entail?

It is my job to make sure each player is following an academic program that allows him to finish high school from his home province, and to make sure players who have a high school diploma take courses that allow them to get into University, if that is the direction they want to pursue, after the Q. It is always difficult, because I am dealing with 10-12 different educational programs/schools!

Can you explain the players' academic programs?

Many of the players take classes from Kaplan University (before this year it was Central Maine Community College). Most players, if they stay with us for 4 years, will have taken 15 to 20 university courses. Many high schools in the Maritimes also count these courses as credit to graduate from high school. The high school players from Quebec must finish what is called Secondary V, which leads to taking Cegep in Quebec. Cegep is the last year of high school and first year of college combined.

How does the language barrier (as with Russian goaltender Andrey Makarov) affect academic arrangements?

The language barrier at first for some players gets in the way, but these players are very bright and pick the language up quickly. Instructors understand this issue and help the players if need be. Andrey Makarov is going to Bates College and working with the Russian language department by attending the Russian table as well as meetings with students majoring in Russian.

What is your role with women's hockey at Bates College?

I am the head women's ice hockey coach at Bates College and have been for 6 years now. I have always been involved in ice hockey since I was a child. A long-time educator, I was the varsity coach at Lewiston High school for 5 years - we won 4 state Championships, and we were runner up in the other year. I also coached football and skiing at Lewiston High School. I have coached my entire adult life, at every level of USA hockey. I was previously the New England Director for women's ice hockey for USA hockey. My daughter, who won the state championship with Lewiston High as a player on the boy's team, now coaches at Boston University. I have been involved in ice hockey for a long time! Now I have a three-year-old grandson, and he just started skating, so I think I will continue to be involved.

Is there any crossover between the Bates and MAINEiacs hockey worlds?

I often have MAINEiacs players help Bates players with certain skills and drills. In return, I often use some of my players to tutor MAINEiacs players that may need academic help. I will add that most Canadian players are way ahead of their American counterparts in Math.

Back to your role with the MAINEiacs - how did you get started as Academic Advisor?

Renee Bernier, who was previously billet coordinator and very involved with the organization, realized they needed some help with the education program. Things were not going well the first year, and I had just retired from public education, so I started working with the team as the academic advisor.

What or who influenced you to get involved with hockey?

My father used to take me skating on ponds in the area, and we would ice fish and play hockey at the same time. I started playing ice hockey at St. Louis school after one of the priests put up an ice hockey rink. I was in the 5th grade - the rest is history! My senior year at Edward Little, we played for the championship against St. Doms and also went to the New England championship - the only EL team to ever do so.

Do you have any wisdom to share with current students who are MAINEiacs fans?

It is important for all student athletes and students to realize that it is great to have dreams of playing professional sports, but you are only one injury away from making it, or you just don't get the call. A good education should always be one of your options. These MAINEiacs players are very good students, and they work as hard in the classroom as they do on the ice. Education is the one thing nobody can ever take away from you.

I have been fortunate with this position. I have met a lot of great people who want to help young people be successful. I have learned a lot about education throughout the world, especially all regions of Canada.

MOvember: Week 1 Update

As we approach week two, a little compassion and understanding is needed from all. For Mo Bros not used to a moustache, this is the week where things might get a little uncomfortable as things start to itch where you're not used to them itching. Though this is the normal process as your little bit of lip luxury lays down its foundations, it can put some people off. This is where a supportive Mo Sista is needed to step in with words and a wink of encouragement. Like all great men and women when faced with adversity, this is not the time to look away feebly and not the time to reach for the razor. It is a time to stand tall, look the itch in the eye and say "come and get me". It's a week of adjustment for everyone - Mo Bros and Sistas and their loved ones and donors. Movember wills you to stay strong and committed to the almighty Mo.
