Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release


Best Team Since October 1st- Once the calendar flipped over to October, the MAINEiacs began to heat up. After posting a 2-3-2 record in September, Lewiston has been the best team in the QMJHL since October 1st, going 16-5-0, for a total of 32 points. A 10-game winning streak was part of that stretch, as well as a 13-3 record in their last 16 games. Thanks to their recent success, the MAINEiacs are now just two points out of first place in the league, and could be tied for first with a win tonight.

#2 Star of the Week- On Monday afternoon, MAINEiacs' goaltender Nicholas Champion was awarded with the #2 Star of the Week in the QMJHL, after posting wins in both of his starts last week. This is the second time this season that Champion has been honored as a star (1st Star from October 11-17), as well as the fourth time this season that Lewiston has had a star. The 20-year old has a 16-2-1 record this season, winning each of his last nine games, and 14 of his last 15 games.

Top Goaltending Prospect- Earlier this month, NHL Central Scouting came out with their list of the top prospects from each league for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The top goaltender listed in the QMJHL was Chicoutimi 's Christopher Gibson. Gibson's sophomore season in the Q has started strong, as the 18-year old leads the league in goals against average (2.20) and save percentage (.928). Alexandre Lavoie (27th) joined his teammate on the list, while Andrey Makarov (4th among goalies) and Samuel Henley (18th) made it from Lewiston .

Killing Penalties- During the team's last road trip, the MAINEiacs successfully killed off 18 out of 21 power plays for the opposition (85.7%). Despite being put on the penalty kill a league-high 146 times, Lewiston has fared well, keeping their opponents off of the scoreboard 122 times. The MAINEiacs' 83.6% penalty kill is ranked fourth in the QMJHL.

Season Series- Lewiston and Chicoutimi have played two of their six head-to-head contests thus far this season, with both clubs winning at home. On September 18th, the Saguenéens erased a pair of one-goal deficits in a 5-4 shootout win at the Centre Georges Vezina. Then, on October 13th, the MAINEiacs earned a 3-1 win at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Former MAINEiac Billy Lacasse has factored in all five goals for Chicoutimi , while Etienne Brodeur has four points to lead Lewiston .

Head-to-Head- Tonight marks the 32nd all-time meeting between the MAINEiacs and Saguenéens. Chicoutimi has the lead in the all-time series, winning 16 times. Lewiston has 14 wins against the Saguenéens, and there has also been one tie. The MAINEiacs have had the edge at home, as they have won ten of the 16 games played at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, including a 3-1 decision on October 13th.
