TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (24-22) failed to hold a late lead as the Jupiter Hammerheads (22-25) won 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Jupiter designated hitter Blake Barber homered off of reliever Alex Smith to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth. Smith (2-2) allowed the go-ahead run to score in the 10th as Tampa suffered its first extra-inning loss of the season.
Dante Bichette Jr. gave the Yankees an early lead with a couple of two-out RBI singles against Hammerheads' starter Trevor Williams.
Jake Cave led off the first with a single to and advanced to third on groundouts by Cito Culver and Greg Bird. Bichette hit a groundball up the middle, putting the Yankees on the board.
An error at second by Anthony Gomez allowed Claudio Custodio to reach in the third. Custodio then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Culver. After a walk by Greg Bird, Bichette drove in his second RBI of the game with a single to right.
Williams received a no-decision after pitching six innings for Jupiter. The righty allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, striking out one.
Yankees starter Conner Kendrick left the game after facing four batters in the first. A one-hop smash by Viosergy Rosa hit off of Kendrick's left hand. RHP Brett Gerritse entered and retired the final out of the inning.
Jupiter tied the game in the fourth. With runners on the corners, Barber hit an RBI fielder's choice. Barber later scored on a double by Ryan Goetz, tying the game at 2-2.
Gerritse pitched five and a third innings, allowing two runs on six hits. The righty walked one and struck out one.
Tampa took a lead in the seventh. Trent Garrison singled to center, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. A sacrifice bunt by Custodio pushed Garrison to second. Cave moved the runner to third with a groundout before a wild pitch allowed Garrison to score the go-ahead run for the Yankees.
LHP Dietrich Enns fanned four of the seven batters he faced, pitching two scoreless frames of relief for Tampa. Smith picked up his second blown save of the year after allowing the Barber home run in the ninth.
With runners on the corners in the 10th, Matt Juengel delivered an RBI fielder's choice off of Smith, giving Jupiter a 4-3 lead.
RHP Reid Redman earned his second save after pitching a scoreless 10th for Jupiter. Righty Matt Montgomery (1-0) earned the win, allowing a run on two hits in three innings of relief.
Bichette went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Cave went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
The series wraps up with a 5:00 p.m. start on Friday. Southpaw Eric Wooten (2-2, 3.02 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. RHP Josh Hodges (0-4, 7.69 ERA) is set to counter for Jupiter.
