Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC put another check on the win column, keeping up a dominant win streak at home.
They beat fellow USL Western Conference club Whitecaps FC 2 3-0, thanks to a shutout by Goalkeeper Devala Gorrick, a strong defense, and an attacking offense.
"It was a great team win,"Â said Switchbacks FC Goalkeeper Devala Gorrick. "I want to congratulate the back four for helping keep the clean sheet and it's a great confidence booster leading into the next couple of weeks." The match started with both teams fighting for possession and that first goal. However, in true Switchbacks FC fashion, the team came alive in the last 10 minutes of the match, netting their final two goals.
The game came to a halt in the 29th minute, when lightning struck and the match was delayed for more than an hour.
That storm was all Switchbacks FC needed to inspire them to strike and in the 41st minute, Aaron King (#18) did just that netting a rebound off a shot from Miguel Gonzalez (#10) putting Switchbacks FC up 1-0 and recording his 4th goal in all competitions this season.
The second half started with the Whitecaps FC 2 pushing the ball into their attacking half. Despite several well-placed balls, they just weren't able to find the back of the net.
Then Switchbacks FC's Captain Luke Vercollone (#4) was able to score with a left- footed shot, thanks to a well-placed ball by Marty Maybin (#9).
Just a couple of minutes later, Maybin got his number called when Davy Armstrong (#6) crossed the ball in front of the net and Maybin placed it into the back of the side netting.
Switchbacks FC were able to maintain the clean sheet thanks in no small part to a big save by Goalkeeper Devala Gorrick in the 89th min.
"I think we did well defensively with JJ Greer (#34) and Josh Phillips (#2) holding the line, especially with their [Whitecaps FC 2] direct style of play,"Â said Switchbacks FC Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "We scored three good goals and got the three points we needed to push us ahead in the standings."
