NAHL North American Hockey League

Sweep For Santa Fe

February 13, 2007 - North American Hockey League (NAHL) News Release

The Santa Fe RoadRunners finally got a crack at St. Louis last weekend and they didn't disappoint, skating to a three-game sweep over the South Division leaders.

"We were certainly fired up at having a chance to measure against the top team in the division," said RoadRunners coach Scott Langer, whose team improved to 30-11-4. "We proved that intensity by scoring goals within the first couple minutes of each game."

On Thursday, the RoadRunners opened up a 3-0 lead in the first period en route to a 4-3 victory. Corey Jendras and Tibor Kutalek each scored a goal and an assist, with Thomas Kleidon netting the game-winner. Between the pipes, Nick Hopper turned aside 23 shots.

The next night, Santa Fe skated to a 3-2 shootout win over the Bandits. Cody Omilusik and Josh Kamrass (pictured left) scored in regulation for the RoadRunners, with Alex Laseen and Jason Krispel lighting the lamp in the shootout. Bryce Merriam stopped 31 shots and all four in the shootout.

The RoadRunners capped off their first three-game home sweep in franchise history with a 5-2 win over St. Louis on Saturday. Kutalek struck for two more goals, while Kamrass added a goal and an assist. Andrew Kappers and Krispel each chipped in two assists, while Hopper made 25 saves.

"Our goaltending came up big, and we played solid hockey for 60 minutes each night, which is the only way you can beat a quality team like St. Louis," said Langer.

Hopper and Merriam, both college hopefuls, have been nothing shot of exceptional for the RoadRunners all season long.

"No coach could ask for more from a pair of goalies," said Langer. "They work well together, they push each other and they're driven to win. Both of these guys are incredible young men off the ice as well and will certainly benefit their college programs in years to come."

With 30 goals on the season - second most in the league behind Fairbanks' Kyle Schmidt - Kutalek continues to assert himself as one of the league's top offensive threats.

"He's a leader," said Langer. "He can energize the bench and the crowd and his enthusiasm for the game is contagious."

Kamrass has also evolved as a go-to guy offensively.

"Josh is a guy who has blossomed from a promising vet to a legitimate scoring threat," said Langer. "When the team needs a big goal, I want him on the ice."

Defensively, unassuming Rafael Rodriguez continues to make solid contributions on a nightly basis, most times keeping the opposition off the scoresheet.

Newcomers Laseen, Jendras and Jonathon Milhouse have bolstered the RoadRunners' depth upfront, while Krispel and Omilusik continue to flex their versatility.

"Not just on their regular shifts, but on both special-team units as well," Langer said of the pair.

After stumbling out of the blocks after Christmas losing four straight games, Santa Fe has now won seven of its last nine. It doesn't get any easier for the RoadRunners, as they play 12 of their last 17 games on the road, including a five-game swing through Alaska to end the regular season.

"The confidence and belief in ourselves that we had in the first half of the season is back," said Langer. "As long as we stay healthy, we should be fine."
