LAST TIME OUT
MOOSIC, PA (June 18, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders shut out the Rochester Red Wings 3-0 on Saturday evening. Matt Krook pitched seven shutout innings in the longest outing by any RailRiders' pitcher this season.
The RailRiders broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Jake Bauers against Red Wings' starter Carson Teel. Tim Locastro had a one-out double and came home on the run-scoring hit by Bauers. Teel allowed one run over four innings with seven strikeouts in his second start of the season. Meanwhile, RailRiders starter Matt Krook pitched seven shutout innings with five strikeouts. It tied the longest outing of Krook's career and was the first time a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher has gone at least seven frames this year.
SWB added two insurance runs in the ninth. Ronald Guzmán doubled to lead off the inning, then stole his first base of the season and came home on a wild pitch. Estevan Florial extended his team-high hitting streak to 11 games with a single later in the frame, swiped his club-leading 22nd bag of the campaign and also scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Jimmy Cordero and Greg Weissert finished off the shutout with two scoreless innings out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen. Krook (2-6) earned his second win for the RailRiders. Weissert (6) logged his sixth save. Teel (2-1) suffered the loss for Rochester.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Rochester Red Wings for the only time this season for a six-game series from June 14 to June 19. These two teams have met six times prior in New York, with the Red Wings winning five of six. The two will meet again at Frontier Field at the end of July.
PICK A SIDE - The Rochester Red Wings find themselves back in second place in the International League East entering Sunday's finale. They entered the series in first place, dipped to second by the end of Wednesday, were back in first by Friday and are back in second today.
BET ON THE SET - If the RailRiders win today, they will tally their first series win at PNC Field this season and their first at home since they took five of six against these very Rochester Red Wings September 7-12, 2021. The RailRiders have won just two series this season, both on the road and both against the Syracuse Mets.
DUB-NESKI - Hayden Wesneski will get a second crack at the Rochester Red Wings today. He faced them in the opener on Tuesday and faced Sterling Sharp then as well. The number five prospect in the Yankees system twirled his team-best third quality start of the season as the RailRiders cruised to a 7-0 victory on Tuesday. Strangely enough, the righty also pitched the first and last games of a series when Scranton/Wilkes-Barre met Rochester at Frontier Field on May 3 and May 8. The RailRiders lost both of those games.
OUR FAVORITE CHRIS - The Yankees have signed infielder Chris Owings to a Minor League contract and have assigned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Owings was last with the Baltimore Orioles, playing in 27 games in the Majors this season. He has also been in the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals systems. He was placed on unconditional release waivers on June 12 by the Orioles. Despite hitting .107 with Baltimore this year, Owings slashed .326/.420/.628 in 21 games with the Rockies in 2021.
HEY OLD FRIEND - According to Conor Foley on Saturday, RailRiders beat writer for the Times-Tribune: "Oswaldo Cabrera (shoulder) is progressing through his rehab in Tampa, and it sounds like things are going well. He's swinging a bat." Cabrera played 22 games with the RailRiders, batting .186 before being shut down with shoulder issues that eventually got him shipped out to Tampa. He has not appeared in a game since May 8 and was placed on the injured list on May 16.
SWIPER YES SWIPING - Estevan Florial stole three bases on Friday. It was the second time this season he had completed the feat. The last time he had done it was on May 6 where he stole three bases against Rochester at Frontier Field. The catcher behind the plate for both of those games was Tres Barerra. He went on to steal another bag on Saturday against Taylor Gushue.
FLO-BP RIDA - Estevan Florial finds himself on an eleven-game hitting streak (16-for-46, .348) entering Sunday, the longest hitting streak for any RailRider this season. Prior to this stretch, Florial's longest hit streak in his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre career lasted nine games from June 24 to July 4, 2021 where he went 13-for-37 (.351). He has now tied the longest hitting streak of his career which occurred from July 30 to August 12, 2017 while with the Charleston RiverDogs (15-for-45, .333).
STREAKY - Ronald Guzmán has a five-game hitting streak... Oswald Peraza has a three-game hitting streak... Zach Greene has made four-straight scoreless appearances... Greg Weissert has made four-straight scoreless outings...
ON DECK - The RailRiders are on the road starting Tuesday in Toledo, Ohio to face the Mud Hens. They return home on Tuesday, June 28 to face the Buffalo Bisons. It's "Twosday" at PNC Field. Get 2-for-1 lawn or bleacher seats online only and enjoy $2 Landshark Lager tallboys for two hours after gates open, presented by PrimoHoagies and The River.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (49-16) blanked the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 on Saturday. Jameson Taillon earned the win in 5.2 shutout innings. Aaron Hicks and Isiah Kiner-Falefa brought in runs on doubles. Luis Severino faces Yusei Kikuchi Sunday at 1:37 PM for the finale in Canada... The Somerset Patriots (44-21) won their sixth straight game with a 4-3 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Brandon Lockridge, who went 3-for-5 in the game, broke the tie with a two-run double in the seventh inning. The series wraps on Sunday with a 1:35 PM first pitch... The Hudson Valley Renegades (31-31) lost both games of a doubleheader to the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The losses ended a five-game winning streak. TJ Sikkema gets the ball on Sunday at 1:45 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (26-36) rallied but came up just shy to the St. Lucie Mets 7-6 on Saturday. Anthony Garcia walked four times and scored twice. They wrap the series on Sunday at 12:10 PM...
