Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release
LAKE CHARLES LA. - In what was arguably the wildest game for the Swashbucklers so far in 2012 the Purple-And-Black gang won their second game of the year in a thriller over the Richmond Raiders 47-45 as the lead exchanged hands several times before the end of the game. The Bucs now go to 2-3 on the year as Richmond drops to 4-2.
The first points came when Bucs wide receiver Jordan Rideaux caught a pass from Alvin Bartie at the one-yard line 12 minutes into the game. Despite a penalty that followed, Rideaux took the ball in on the next play. No one would score again until six minutes left in the first when Bucs kicker Blake Bercegeay kicked a field goal that made it 10-0. Before the first quarter ended Louisiana recovered a Raider fumble thanks to defensive back Brandon Thomas on the 15 yard line. That set up another touchdown pass from Bartie to Rideaux covering 15 yards on the play. A later field goal gave Louisiana a commanding 16-0 lead to end the first.
Eleven minutes into the second quarter Richmond got on the scoreboard for the first time on a four-yard scamper into paydirt courtesy of Richmond fullback Anthony Silvers. After another Bercgeay field goal two passes from Raiders quarterback Antwon Young to wideout Antwaun Williams resulted in scores that brought the visitors closer to the Swashbucklers.
But they were not finished yet. Richmond defensive back Brent Trice intercepted Bartie at the 25 yard line and brought it back to the six. The Bucs defense held and the Raiders had to settle for a field goal. The score became 19-17 but changed on the kickoff when kicker T.C. Stevens nailed an uno to make it 19-18. The Swashbucklers went to Freddie Harrison as the quarterback when Bartie went down with an injury before the end of the half. He found wide receiver Marcus Wildridge on a bomb that went down just about the length of the field to make it 22-18 at the half.
The third quarter saw the first lead for Richmond come to pass when wide receiver Herb Jones took in a scoring pass from Young with 13 minutes remaining in the period. Harrison responded shortly with an eight yard short pass to running back Kenrick Perry. The score went from 25-22 Raiders to 29-25 Swashbucklers relatively quickly. The next score would come with six minutes left in the third when Richomond's Brandon Grier caught his own touchdown pass putting the Raiders back ahead 32-29. This was indicative of how the lead would flip-flop throughout the second half.
Rideaux would bring the partisan crowd alive when he caught an eight-yard shoestring catch right on the goal line which was followed by an extra point kick that was blocked. On the ensuing kickoff to Richmond Jones ran the ball down the length of the field but did not find the endzone. But Silvers did just a couple of plays later which gave the Raiders the lead again 39-35.But before the third quarter could end Louisiana answered right back with a Harrison bomb to wideout Immanuel Friddle that put the Bucs back on top 41-39.
The fourth quarter provided more drama as a penalty on the Swashbucklers put Richmond at first and goal. After a defensive stand by Louisiana linebacker Ellis Mead intercepted a Young pass and ran it back to the one-yard line. Perry would later get the ball in over the goal line and now it was a 47-39 Bucs lead. A two-point conversion effort failed.
Richmond got one more score in with slightly over five minutes left in the game when Williams hauled in a scoring pass from Young. The point after kick was no good when the ball veered and hit one of the uprights. There was now less than five minutes left in the game. The Swashbucklers' Jabari Hendricks fell on the ball following a Raiders onside kick but could not take advantage of the opportunity. On a later possession by Richmond the Bucs were able to capitalize on a fumble by the Raiders. Though Rideaux would catch another pass by Harrison that put the ball on the five-yard line they were able to run out the clock and Louisiana got by in a squeaker with a 47-45 final.
The Swashbucklers will travel to Knoxville next Friday to take on the league expansion team Knighthawks. This will be the first meeting this season between the two teams.
