Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES LA. - In a renewal of an old rivalry from a few years ago the Louisiana Swashbucklers once again defeated the Corpus Christi Hammerheads 69-47 in Southern Indoor Football League action. The win brings the Bucs to 9-2 while Corpus Christi evens their record to 5-5. The two teams were former members of the now-defunct Intense Football League. The Hammerheads joined the SIFL for the 2011 season.

The Hammerheads drew first blood in the game when wide receiver Julius Eppinger caught a 20 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Anthony Andre two minutes into the game. Three minutes later the Bucs struck back when quarterback Ben McLaughlin found Taurean Robinson for a 15 yard strike that evened the score. Shortly afterwards defensive back Brandon Thomas intercepted an Andre pass which set up a touchdown score from McLaughlin to wideout Jordan Rideaux. After a uno from kicker Blake Bercegay the score was 14-7 until Corpus Christi struck again with a short touchdown pass from Andre to Nathaniel Dunn which tied the game. A field goal for the Bucs followed by another Bercegay uno made it 18-14. On the last play the Hammerheads were hit with a face mask penalty.

The second quarter was the most productive in the game when it came to scoring. Corpus Christi scored on a down the field bomb from Andre to Keith Smith. They also got a safety just a few minutes later when McLaughlin was sacked in the end zone. With seven minutes left in the half Louisiana's defensive back Damien Huren intercepted an Andre pass that stopped a critical drive. That was immediately followed by a TD reception from McLaughlin to wide receiver Mike Maciejewski. The Hammerheads returned the favor a few minutes later on a lateral to Chris Peete resulting in another score. This was after McLaughlin threw another interception. On the next Swashbucklers scoring play by a run from Rodney Beamon the Hammerheads were slapped with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. After one last TD reception from Andre to Eppinger the first half ended with a 33-35 Corpus Christi advantage.

In the second half it was all Swashbucklers as they dominated the third quarter. After an early scoring play for the Bucs that was followed soon after by a run into the end zone from linebacker Ellis Mead. Andre lost the ball on a snap and was recovered by Louisiana's Bryant Mason who recovered and returned the ball for a score. Wide receiver Sammy Knight ended the period with a reception into paydirt that had the scoreboard displaying 54-35 for the Bucs.

The Bucs and Hammerheads would exchange scoring plays in the fourth to end the game with the final of 69-47. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, June 4, at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.
