Swashbucklers Name McAfee Head Coach

October 2, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES, La. (October 2, 2009)  - Louisiana Swashbucklers owner Thom Hager announced today (October 2, 2009) that Shadrick McAfee has been named head coach of the three-time champion indoor football team and defending Southern Indoor Football League champions.

McAfee, 35, is a former Swashbuckler and Lake Charles Landshark who also spent time in the af2 (Bossier City) and CFL (Edmonton) and the outdoor Regional Football League (New Orleans). A triple threat at running back, wide receiver and kick returner, McAfee attended Philadelphia High School in Mississippi and played his college ball at Division II National Champion Mississippi College and the University of Central Arkansas. He won several accolades including all Gulf South Conference and All America.

He returns to Lake Charles after serving as an assistant coach for the SIFL's Acadiana Mudbugs (now Lafayette Wildcatters) in 2009.

When the Swashbucklers were faced with replacing three-time champion head coach Darnell Lee, a very short list was created and the phone calls and decisions were made in one day.

``One of the keys to the Swashbucklers success is leadership; another is chemistry, so to promote from within was the first option in order to keep the momentum of winning alive,'' Hager said. ``Our choice was clear. Each year I watch the chemistry on the field between players. I also look for leaders each season. Year after year we see several players step into leadership roles, but one individual simply stood out consistently - Shadrick McAfee.

"We offered Shadrick the position two days ago and asked him to think about it, talk about it, and pray about it. His 'yes' was an answer to prayer," Hager added. ``Shadrick will lead the Swashbucklers to another victorious season because he knows the game, was a very smart player, and believes in the chemistry of the Swashbucklers.''

"There's something very special about being a Swashbuckler," McAfee said. "To be the head coach of this team allows me to be more than a head coach, but to become a leader of men. I am proud of the accomplishments of these men and look forward to advancing this legendary organization in Southwest Louisiana."
