Swashbucklers Going For Number Four
July 1, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release
LAKE CHARLES LA. - The Louisiana Swashbucklers will be taking on the Albany Panthers Saturday for the 2011 Southern Indoor Football League championship. The Bucs are playing for the fourth championship in team history while the Panthers are going for their first. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST at the James H. Gray Civic Center in Albany, Ga. This is the fifth consecutive time the Purple-and-Black gang is making an appearance in a title game. The first two were in the Intense Football League, which is now defunct. The remaining three have been in the SIFL.
Swashbucklers head coach Darnell Lee knows what it's like to play in a game of this magnitude, having been through this before in his coaching career. Though the Bucs had to go through the Corpus Christi Hammerheads and Houston Stallions to reach this point, each game has its own challenges. "It doesn't matter who we play or what level we are at in the postseason," he said. "Our focus is to play our brand of indoor football. We prepare for each team individually and concentrate on our plan one game at a time. We do this in the regular season and the playoffs. And it's a system that has worked for us."
The Panthers made it to the title game by means of taking out the Erie Explosion and the Columbus Lions in the postseason. With the Lions defeated this means a new champion will be crowned when the game is completed. The Bucs will be concentrating on containing Albany quarterback Cecil Lester, wide receivers Antwone Savage and Antwontis Cutts. On offense the team will be looking to score points on a Panther defense that has been efficient in keeping opposing offenses to a minimum in the regular season.
Coach Lee offers his thoughts on what's at stake in this game. "We want to bring back to Lake Charles another championship," he said. "The players are focused and hungry. We started this season with the goal of winning another SIFL title. And now it's down to one game. Our fans have been so supportive of us now and in the past. We want to do this for them."
