Swashbucklers Getting Ready for SIFL Title Game
June 29, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release
LAKE CHARLES LA. - The Louisiana Swashbucklers are working on a game plan for this coming Saturday ¬â¢s contest against the Albany Panthers. At stake: The championship of the Southern Indoor Football League. This will be the fifth consecutive trip the Bucs have taken to the title match. The team won the championship of the now-defunct Intense Football League in 2007 and ¬â¢08 and took home the trophy in 2009, which was the inaugural year of the SIFL. The Bucs want to avoid the results of the 2010 game, in which the Columbus Lions defeated the Purple-and-Black gang 68-13.
The wheel comes full circle for both teams since the 2011 season started with Albany coming from behind to defeat the Bucs 30-27 on March 19th. Though Louisiana had a 27-7 lead at the half, the Panther defense shut down the Bucs ¬â¢ ¬ÅMonster Defense ¬Â in the second half. This allowed Albany quarterback Cecil Lester to toss three touchdown passes. The game ended in Albany ¬â¢s favor when kicker Wes Virgilio had a successful field goal at the end of regulation play.
So far Albany is 12-2 on the season while Louisiana is 10-4.
Both teams come into the title game by virtue of some impressive performances in the conference championship games last weekend. The Panthers took care of business against the Columbus Lions 75-61. Columbus is the defending SIFL champion though a new one will be crowned Saturday. Louisiana came into this game by means of taking out the Houston Stallions 56-41 Monday night. Throughout the regular season Houston was undefeated.
The Monster Defense will have its hands full trying to contain Lester. In the regular season he has amassed 64 touchdowns and has thrown only 15 interceptions. Lester will be looking downfield for wide receiver Antwone Savage, who caught 19 TD passes this year. The upcoming game should be an offensive showdown with the Swashbucklers having scored 60 points or more in the 10 regular season games following the opener. For the remainder of the schedule Albany scored less than 40 points just one time.
The SIFL championship game will take place this coming Saturday, July 2nd, at the James H. Gray Civic Center in Albany. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with pregame activities starting 30 minutes earlier.
