Swashbucklers Defeat Alabama Hammers

June 16, 2012 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES LA - The Louisiana Swashbucklers end the 2012 regular season with a 6-6 record by virtue of defeating the Alabama Hammers 75-70. Though the Columbus Lions beat the Knoxville Nighthawks 76-63, the Swashbucklers will enter the PIFL playoffs as the third seed. But, once again, the Bucs had to come from behind to take it, considering the Hammers surged back from a 20 point deficit to nearly win the game.

The Bucs got off to a blazing start with a 35 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chris Mayabb to Jordan Rideaux on their first possession. Mayabb started in place of Freddie Harrison. Alabama would not score until five minutes later, when Charlie McClain scored on a two yard run. The teams traded scoring opportunities in the first quarter. Mayabb found receiver Sammy Knight, who evaded several tackles on the way to the end zone. Then, Hammers quarterback Arvell Nelson fired one to wide receiver Mico McSwain, who ran past Louisiana's defensive secondary and scored. After one more scoring pass by Swashbucklers receiver Immanuel Friddle, it was 20-14 Bucs to end the first.

Louisiana's running back, Kendrick Perry, electrified the crowd with a 23 yard run for a touchdown to start the second period. McSwain answered that with a 25 yard scoring reception of his own. Jordan Rideaux of the Swashbucklers would score quickly after that, and the scoreboard was 34-21 Louisiana. Perry followed that up with a scoring run from scrimmage. Now it was 41-28 with two minutes left in the half. Another score from Friddle would put the Bucs in charge with 48-28 going into halftime.

When the second half started Alabama went into comeback mode. On the first series for the Hammers Nelson scored on a quarterback sneak. What followed was interesting. On the ensuing kickoff, Bucs offensive lineman Jabari Hendricks picked up the ball and went seven yards into the end zone. From there it was all Alabama as McSwain and McClain both hit paydirt separately. The Swashbucklers would not score again until the end of the quarter. Rideaux caught a 20 yard bomb from Mayabb and found daylight. Though the PAT was no good, kicker Blake Bercegeay got an uno on the following kickoff. It was 62-49 Bucs to end the third.

To start the fourth, Nelson threw a shovel pass though in the grasp of John Paul Jones. Off balance, Nelson's pass was caught by McSwain. An uno followed this play. A turnover by defensive back Marvin Bohannon to Alabama's benefit becomes a scoring play. Now the score is 64-62 Hammers.

With five minutes left in regulation, Louisiana's wide receiver Sammy Knight puts the Bucs in the lead 69-64. Two minutes remaining on the clock, Thomas Harris of the Hammers makes it into the end zone. But, the two-point attempt is botched on a bad snap. With the score 69-70 Hammers, Perry runs the ball in for the Bucs from two yards out. A two-point attempt for Louisiana also goes sour. Now at 75-70, with less than a minute in regulation, Alabama is driving for the end zone. With seven seconds remaining, Swashbucklers linebacker Trey Blackmon intercepts a pass from Nelson. The victory for Louisiana was sealed.

Next weekend, the Swashbucklers will enter the PIFL playoffs along with the Albany Panthers, Columbus Lions, and the Richmond Raiders.
