Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES LA. - In what was a late game surge after blowing a three touchdown lead the Louisiana Swashbucklers prevailed 56-49 over the Alabama Hammers. This was the season opener for the Bucs, who are now 1-0 on the year.

On the first offensive series, Bucs quarterback Alvin Bartie got the ball to running back Kendrick Perry for an eight yard run into the end zone. The Hammers responded with a run from fullback Kenneth Williams that set up first and goal. Despite a delay of game penalty, wide receiver Charles McClain brought the ball in to even the score. Another score from Bartie to Sammy Knight and Alabama with a quarter ending strike, ended the period with a score of 13-14.

The second quarter saw Bartie hit Knight with a 20 yard bomb but a two-point conversion failed. Shortly thereafter a face mask penalty on the Bucs pushed the ball to the middle of the field. Wide receiver for Alabama Mico McSwain caught a pass quarterback Arvell Nelson gave the Hammers a 21-19 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. A 42 field goal attempt by Louisiana kicker Blake Bercegeay was no good. However, redemption came later when he nailed a 40 yard field goal to end the half. Before that Bartie nailed Rideaux with a shoestring catch in the endzone. The score was 29-21 at the half.

The third quarter started with a turnover for Louisiana as defensive back Eric Jackson intercepted Nelson and ran the ball back for 27 yards and a score. A few minutes later the Hammers returned the favor as Bartie was picked off by linebacker Darian Payne. Another pick later set up a score by Bucs defensive back Damien Huren. The PAT was blocked. The Swashbucklers now had a commanding lead of 42-21. But the Hammers started fighting back. The Bucs committed two personal fouls which in turn led to a Nelson sneak play into the end zone. This ended the third period on a score 42-28.

The last period saw Alabama tie the game at 49-49 with just about three minutes left in the game. McSwain caught a scoring pass from Nelson and wide receiver Thomas Harris caught a bomb that set up first and goal for the Hammers. Nelson hit paydirt on another sneak play. Louisiana had scored early in the fourth to keep them in contention despite Alabama's resurgence.

But with 40 seconds left in the game Perry found daylight and punched his way into the endzone putting the Bucs ahead 56-49. A last second interception by Jackson on Nelson sealed the game.

The Swashbucklers will be back in action next Saturday, March 24th, against the Albany Panthers, who also won Saturday night. The game will be in the Smuggler's Den in Lake Charles.
