Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release
LAKE CHARLES LA. - The Louisiana Swashbucklers continue its pursuit of the Southern Indoor Football League championship for 2011 as the team travels to Houston for a showdown with the Stallions. The game is set for Monday, June 27th, at 7:05 p.m. in the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
This will be the third meeting between the two teams. Houston was the only undefeated team in the regular season going 12-0 in the SIFL while the Bucs went 8-4. The Stallions made it to the Western Conference championship by defeating the Rio Grande Valley Magic in overtime 65-62 while Louisiana took care of business against the Corpus Christi Hammerheads 59-20. In the Eastern Conference title game the Albany Panthers will travel to take on the Columbus Lions. This game is scheduled for Saturday, June 25th. The Lions are the defending SIFL champion.
Houston, though undefeated, won three games by three points or less and another by seven. One of those close games came on June 11th when the Stallions defeated the Bucs by a score of 40-38 in Lake Charles. The first meeting between the two teams also found Houston triumphant when Louisiana lost 64-57 on May 15th. The postseason Swashbucklers in the team's history have made a few accomplishments of its own. Louisiana is the only team in the three year existence of the SIFL to have won a playoff game on the road. This happened last season when the Bucs defeated Albany in the first playoff round.
The Purple-And-Black gang will be led on offense by quarterback Ben McLaughlin, who for the regular season had 319 passes with 204 completions and 12 interceptions. McLaughlin has passed in 2011 for 2,265 yards and 50 touchdowns. The offense includes among its receiver corps Marcus Wildridge, Sammy Knight, Mike Maciejewski and Jordan Rideaux. The running game is in the capable hands of Kendrick Perry.
The "Monster Defense" for the Bucs will be counted on to contain Houston's offense. The defense had seven interceptions against Corpus Christi on June 18th. Defensive backs Bryant Mason, Eric Jackson, Brian Harvey Jr., Brandon Thomas and Damien Huren have been terrorizing opposing quarterbacks throughout the season. They will have to contain Stallions quarterback Robert Kent, who this season has had 168 completions out of 252 attempts with seven interceptions. He's thrown for 2,215 yards and 52 touchdowns.
The winners of this weekend's games will move on to the SIFL championship game in early July.
