Minnesota Swarm News Release

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The National Lacrosse League's (NLL) Minnesota Swarm knew they were getting something special when they selected forward Logan Schuss as the first overall pick in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft. However, what they received might have transcended their expectations, as Schuss wrapped up his rookie campaign by being named April's NLL Rookie of the Month on Thursday - the third consecutive time the young forward was picked as the league's top first-year player.

"It's an honor to win this award three months in a row," Schuss said. "Especially since there is such a strong rookie class this year in the NLL with guys like [Calgary Roughnecks transition player] Karsen Leung and [Colorado Mammoth goaltender] Dillon Ward."

Despite taking home Rookie of the Month honors in both February and March, Schuss arguably saved his best performance for April, as he finished the regular season by scoring 27 points (15g, 12a) in the Swarm's final five games. The Ladner, British Columbia native scored at least two goals in each game in April and found the net four times in back-to-back games in Weeks 16-17. His 15 markers in April were the most scored by any player in the NLL over that span. Schuss attributes this success down the stretch to the sense of urgency his team felt to finish their season strong, even after being eliminated from playoff contention.

"We were playing each and every game like it was the championship. That's how we go into every game, just trying to win, no matter if we are in the playoffs or out," Schuss explained. "Our whole team went in there wanting to win, and they got me the ball when we needed it, and I did what I was brought here to do which was score goals."

With a five-point performance (2g, 3a) against the Toronto Rock in Minnesota's season finale on April 26, Schuss brought to a close a rookie season for the Swarm record books. His 73 points (36g, 37a) broke F Shayne Jackson's mark of 61 in 2013, giving Schuss the highest single-season point total ever by a Minnesota rookie. His 36 goals were also a Swarm rookie single-season record, and were the most on his team in 2014, as was his nine power play goals.

Schuss' domination spanned more than just the Swarm roster however; the Ohio State graduate left his name throughout the league leaderboards as well. Among NLL rookies Schuss finished in the top spot in points, goals, assists, power play goals, shots (203), shots-on-goal (158) and finished fourth in loose balls (77). Overall Schuss' phenomenal season landed him in the Top-16 in point scoring, while he finished the regular season sixth in goals and tied for eighth in power play goals among all NLL players.

The young left-hander was the picture of consistency all season, appearing in all 18 of his team's contests and recording at least a point in every game. He was held without a goal only twice, and tallied four or more points in 10 games, including seven of his last eight, as he was able to finish the 2014 campaign on a tear. Schuss undoubtedly has made himself out to be the odds-on favorite to win the 2014 Rookie of the Year award, announced in August.

Schuss headlined a youthful Swarm team that featured four 2014 first-round picks along with a host of other players in only their second year in the league. Heading into the offseason where he will join the Ohio Machine in the MLL and the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the WLA, Schuss is poised and confident that he will return to The Hive in 2015 a more experienced player and will help the Swarm recover from what was a disappointing 2014 season.

"I definitely want to come in to training camp the way I left off my NLL rookie season, which was scoring goals and being one of those go-to offensive players with the Swarm," Schuss said. "I have a big offseason with indoor summer ball, also professional field lacrosse so I'm going to have a stick in my hands five to six days a week."

As the 10th Anniversary season of Swarm Lacrosse comes to a close, the Swarm organization would like to wish a heartfelt thank you to all who have supported the team this season and all throughout their decade in Minnesota.
