Swarm acquires Beirnes and Gibson from Arizona Sting

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota Swarm general manager Marty O'Neill announced today that the National Lacrosse League (NLL) team has acquired forward Kasey Beirnes and defenseman Darryl Gibson from the Arizona Sting in exchange for a first round draft pick in the 2006 and 2007 NLL Entry Draft. Minnesota previously acquired two first round picks from Arizona in exchange for forward Craig Conn on March 24, 2005.

Beirnes, 25 (6/17/80), appeared in one game with Arizona in 2005 before suffering a season-ending injury and recorded one goal. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound forward collected 62 points (33-29=62) and 61 loose balls in 16 games with the Sting in 2004. He established career highs in goals and points during the 2004 campaign and ranked second on the team in goals and fifth in scoring. Beirnes has recorded 168 points (91-77=168) and 214 loose balls in 49 career NLL contests during four seasons with Columbus and Arizona. Columbus originally selected the Fergus, Ontario-native in the third round (28th overall) of the 2001 Entry Draft.

Gibson, 28 (7/28/76), notched 11 points (3-8=11) and 84 loose balls in 16 games with San Jose and Arizona last season. He started the season with the Stealth and tallied one assist in two games before being traded to the Sting in exchange for Cam Sedgwick on January 14. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound defenseman added five assists and picked up 17 loose balls in three playoff games as the Sting advanced to the NLL championship game. Gibson recorded 14 points (6-8=14), 25 penalty minutes and 62 loose balls in 16 games with Toronto during the 2004 campaign setting career highs in games played, goals and penalty minutes. He has collected 71 points (24-47=71), 98 penalty minutes and 388 loose balls in 81 career NLL contests during six seasons with Albany, Toronto, San Jose and Arizona. The Toronto, Ontario-native was a member of the Rock's 2002 and 2003 championship teams.
