Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, today announced the team has signed defenseman Matthew Prapavessis for the 2016-17 season.
"It's no secret having a strong defense is key to winning games and championships, and Matt's addition will greatly help our team's back line," Head Coach Brian Gratz said. "He's a strong, two-way player who has quick feet and will spend some time on special teams as well."
Prapavessis, 25, spent the majority of his rookie campaign last season with the AHL's Rochester Americans, recording two points (1g, 1a) and 12 penalty minutes in 25 contests. He also played seven games with the Elmira Jackals and collected two assists and two penalty minutes. Prapavessis turned pro with Rochester near the end of the 2014-15 campaign and made 10 appearances following a four-year career at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota.
"After some really good talks with the coaches this summer, I was sold on the fact that this is where I wanted to play," Prapavessis said, "My finance and I also did a lot of research and were very impressed by the team, the city, and the affiliation with Hartford and New York. There's no doubt Greenville will be a phenomenal place for us."
While at Bemidji State, the Oakville, Ontario native served as a two-time captain and recorded 70 points (17g, 53a) in 150 career games. He earned WCHA All-Academic team honors in each of his final three seasons and closed out his senior campaign ranked first on the team and third among all WCHA defensemen in scoring. The 6'2, 201-pound blue-liner was also named to the WCHA Second All-Star Team as a senior.
Prior to his collegiate career, Prapavessis spent one season in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Lincoln Stars in 2010-11, where he led all team defensemen with 34 points (10g, 12) in 48 games.
