Sutton Returns to Cougars

October 21, 2008 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) - California Cougars News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Oct. 21, 2008 - The Stockton Cougars, of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro), have agreed to contract terms with defender and 11 year arena soccer veteran Antonio Sutton, it was announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

"Sutton was an important piece to our early success last season," said Cougars head coach and director of soccer operations Bernie Lilavois. "He added a defensive mindset to last year's team and I look for him to add that again this season. We worked well together last year and I think the addition of him and (Aaron) Susi to my staff will work great."

For the second consecutive season, Sutton will act as both a player and assistant coach for the Cougars. He joins fellow assistant coach Aaron Susi and head coach Lilavois on the Cougars coaching staff.

"I'm excited to see how the other teams shape up," said Sutton. "But, I know that we are in a good situation with our team. It's good to see Aaron back; he has a wealth of knowledge that will help us a lot."

Despite dislocating his right knee cap on 1/18/08 in Orlando, Sutton was able to score 10 goals in 23 matches last season. He added eight assists for a total of 28 points while serving in the dual (coach/player) role for the Cougars. Sutton will begin the Cougars season on injured reserve while his knee heals.

Sutton, 34, enters his fourth year with the Cougars and his ninth as a professional in Northern California. He previously played for the Sacramento Knights of the World Indoor Soccer League between 1997 and 2001. Sutton was a member of the 1999 Knights team that won the WISL championship.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to come back to Stockton," said Sutton. "I've got a good base here in California, especially in Sacramento, but it's growing here as well."

He has played professionally in Philadelphia, Dallas, Monterrey and Cleveland. Sutton has accumulated 148 goals and 245 points over 270 games played in his career.

The Cougars began play at Stockton Arena in 2005 and Sutton joins Ato Leone, Brian Farber, Susi and Lilavos as the original Cougars on the new 2008-09 roster.

Also signed to the team are Matt McDougall, Majell Aterado, Pedro Lupercio and Jesus Molina.

The Cougars open their fourth season of professional arena soccer at Stockton Arena this Saturday against the Colorado Lightning at 7:15 p.m. Season, individual and group tickets are available by contacting the Cougars office at (209) 373-1550 or online by visiting www.stocktoncougars.net.
