Surging Giants Rise to Seventh in Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings

March 13, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, Alta. - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week twenty-five edition of the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2018-19 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

The Prince Albert Raiders held strong for another week in the second spot. Three-straight shutouts by goaltender Ian Scott (Toronto Maple Leafs) earned him double honours as the WHL Eli Wilson Goaltending Goaltender of the Week and Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week. Scott now stands alone among Raider goaltenders for shutouts in a single season with eight, surpassing the franchise record of six set by Rejean Beauchemin and Luke Siemens in 2003-04 and 2012-13 respectively. The Raiders will close out their regular season schedule with a home-and-home series against the Saskatoon Blades beginning Friday, March 15 (7:00 p.m. MT) at SaskTel Centre.

Rising two spots to seventh this week were the Vancouver Giants. A topsy-turvy week saw them split a four-game road trip with wins in Kamloops and Seattle while also taking losses against the Spokane Chiefs and Tri-City Americans. However, Tuesday's 5-1 win against the Seattle Thunderbirds gave them a modest two-point lead in the Western Conference standings. Entering the final weekend of play. The Giants begin a home-and-home series against the Kelowna Rockets Friday, March 15 (7:30 p.m. PT) at the Langley Events Centre.

Holding onto a spot in the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings this week were the Everett Silvertips, who came in at 10. After shutting out the Americans 3-0 Friday, the Silvertips lost back-to-back games, falling to the Seattle Thunderbird and Portland Winterhawks. The Silvertips will still finish as one of the top two teams in the Western Conference, thanks in large part to forward Bryce Kindopp. The Lloydminster, Alta. product is one goal shy of reaching the 40-goal mark. He'll get a chance to reach that mark Friday, March 15 (7:05 p.m. PT) when the Silvertips begin a home-and-home series against the Victoria Royals on Vancouver Island.

Earning honourable mentions this week were the Saskatoon Blades and Edmonton Oil Kings.

Having won seven-straight games, the Blades are one of the hottest teams in the league nearing the end of the regular season. Saskatoon will close out their regular season with the aforementioned home-and-home series against the Raiders.

The Oil Kings are on an impressive roll themselves with nine-straight victories. Seven of those nine wins have come within their own division, allowing them to take a two-point lead over the Lethbridge Hurricanes for top spot in the Central Division. The Oil Kings will close out their regular season schedule with a home-and-home series against the Calgary Hitmen beginning Saturday, March 16 (2:00 p.m. MT) at Rogers Place.
