Mississippi Surge News Release
BILOXI, MS -- Matthew Larke had two assists and the game-winning goal in overtime as the Mississippi Surge battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to defeat the Huntsville Havoc by the score of 5-4 in overtime at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday.
Midway through the first period, Justin Rohr blasted home a one-timer on a feed from Bill McCreary to give Huntsville a 1-0 lead at the 11:16 mark. Jeff White extended the Havoc lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal when his shot from the low right circle beat Mississippi goalie Bill Zaniboni through traffic at 18:08.
Tim Velemirovich got the Surge on the board early in the second when he rifled a shot from the right circle past Huntsville netminder Mark Sibbald just 28 seconds in.
Ryan Bartle tied the game for the Surge when he batted a fluttering puck out of the air and past Sibbald at the 7:10 of the second period. The Havoc regained the lead at 12:50 when Justin Rohr potted his second of the game. The back-and-forth third period continued with the Surge's Mike Richard scoring a power-play goal to tie the game at three-apiece at 15:49 of the third, and Huntsville answering back 19 seconds later when Chris Myers beat Zaniboni on a two-on-one to give the Havoc a 4-3 lead.
Late in the third period, the Havoc found themselves in penalty trouble, going two men down when Bill McCreary took a slashing minor at 19:09. With Zaniboni on the bench for an extra attacker, Tim Velemirovich knocked in his second goal of the night to tie the game at four with 20 seconds left in the third period.
Matthew Larke provided the overtime heroics, taking the puck coast-to-coast and driving hard to the net to tuck it behind Sibbald for a 5-4 Surge win at 1:37 of overtime.
Bill Zaniboni made 27 saves to earn his sixth win of the season and the Surge went 3-for-9 on the power play.
