Richard Vanderhoek's first professional goal stood up as the game winner for the Mississippi Surge which defeated the Hutsville Havoc 4-2, Thursday night in Huntsville, Ala. The win is the fifth for the Surge in its last six games.
Vanderhoek's goal came at 3:36 of the second period and stretched the Surge lead to 3-1 at the time. Jeff Grant opened the scoring for the Surge midway through the first period. Grant later assisted on two Surge goals giving him three points for the night. Mississippi stretched the lead to 2-0 when defenseman B.J. Crum, playing in his first game with the Surge, scored at 15:10 of the first period. Huntsville narrowed the gap with a power play goal by Colin Reddin with 1:33 left in the first period.
After Vanderhoek's goal early in the second period, the Surge extended its lead when Payden Benning got his first goal of the season at 8:58. Five minutes later, Bill Baker scored for Huntsville, rounding out the scoring as the teams battled through a scoreless third period.
Dan Clarke made 31 saves in goal for the Surge, which ran its road record to 4-0-1, the only team in the Southern Professional Hockey League without a regulation time road loss this season. The Surge will visit the Mississippi RiverKings Friday at 7:05 p.m.
Friday's game will be on the televisions at Mugshots grill and bar. The Surge will be holding a special watch party at Mugshots, giving away prizes throughout the evening. Injured Surge players Cole Ruwe and Matt Gordon will also be on hand at Mugshots to watch the game.
