Surge Signs Michael Richard

BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Surge announced that forward Michael Richard has signed on for the 2010-2011 campaign.
The slick stick-handling Richard was last year's leading scorer for the Mississippi Surge, appearing in 51 games for the Surge yielding 24 goals and 51 assists for a team leading 75 points. The Surge fans were treated to one of the league's best and at just 26 years of age has his best years ahead.
"Mike is a very intense competitor; he truly took it personally with the Surge coming up short in the championship playoff round against the Huntsville Havoc. He has re-dedicated himself as evidenced by his commitment to intense off-season conditioning. Mike wants to be the go to guy for us. I certainly believe that he can be one of the league's "elite" stated Coach Walby.
The former Rookie of the Year will be entering his third season in the SPHL, and second with Mississippi Surge. He will be counted on heavily not only to lead the team in scoring and on the ice, but to also lead the team in the dressing room.
"I expect Rocket to take on a bigger leadership role this year" expressed Playing Assistant Coach Steve Weidlich, "We all have seen what he can do on the ice, we know that in trusting his natural leadership qualities he can also really be a big assist to the younger guys coming into camp."
Michael Richard a native of St. Constant, Quebec Canada has always had a natural scoring touch and often gets the nickname of "Rocket" - a reference to the legendary Montreal Canadiens star Maurice "Rocket" Richard whose name was given to the annually awarded NHL goal scoring award. In his four years at Elmira College Richard tallied 42 goals and 84 assists in 111 games played. A gritty, tenacious forward with plenty of drive and scoring punch making a successful combination for the stocky yet elusive 5'9' 210 pound right winger.
"It was an easy decision for me to come back to the Gulf Coast because of the coaching staff, my team mates, and especially the great fans. I am looking forward to this season because we have the potential of winning a championship.", voiced the upbeat Richard.
