Mississippi Surge News Release

The Mississippi Surge scored three third period goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit and lost 4-3 to the Louisiana IceGators Sunday afternoon at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Louisiana's special teams ruled the game, scoring three power play goals and one shorthanded goal. Robert Short had a power play goal in the first period and Denny Kearney scored a power play and Shawn McNeil had a shorthanded goal in the second period, lifting Louisiana to a 3-0 lead.

The Surge began its third period comeback attempt as Tommy Lange scored twice, with a goal at 7:35 and another at 12:52 of the period. Kearney got his second power play goal of the game, and Louisiana's third with 3:31 left, but the Surge wasn't deterred by the two goal deficit. Jeff Grant scored a minute 22 seconds later, and the Surge battled to get the tying goal, but was unable to.

Louisiana was 3-for-7 on the power play and had scored two man advantage goals, before the Surge even had a power play opportunity. The first man advantage for Mississippi came with 2:24 left in the second period. Ironically, it was that penalty that led to Louisiana's shorthanded goal. On the game, the Surge was scoreless on its three power play opportunities.

The one-goal win for Louisiana turned the tables, as the Surge had defeated the IceGators 2-1 on Saturday night. The Surge will be back in action at home on Wednesday, hosting the Mississippi RiverKings at 7:05 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
