Surge Power Play Boxes Up Win Over IceGators

BILOXI, MS -- The Mississippi Surge ran their unbeaten streak to six games with a 6-2 victory that over the Louisiana IceGators on Saturday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

For the second consecutive night, Louisiana drew first blood, with A.J. Tucker stuffing the puck under Mississippi goaltender Bill Zaniboni at 16:34 of the first frame. Two minutes later, with the Surge on the power play, Zaniboni threw a breakout pass up to Steve Weidlich, who gained the blue line and dished to Velemirovich. The Thompson, Man.-native rifled a one-timer past Louisiana netminder Jimmy Spratt to tie the game at one-apiece at 18:34.

Cam Lilley gave Louisiana the lead back when he broke in to the Mississippi zone two-on-one with Omicioli, caught a pass from the veteran forward and backhanded the puck by Zaniboni at 4:38 of the second. Midway through the second period, the Surge roared to life when Mike Richard carried the puck down the left wing, drove the net and tucked the puck under Spratt to tie the game at two at 10:38. Less than ninety seconds later, Chris Greene blasted a shot from the top of the slot past Spratt for a power-play goal at 12:10. At 12:54, Matt Zultek scored his 15th power-play goal of the year, backhanding the rebound of Steve Weidlich's shot from the top of the circle past Spratt for a 4-2 Mississippi lead. Weidlich then potted a power-play goal of his own, tapping home the rebound of Zultek's shot at 13:54 to give the Surge a 5-2 lead.

Mississippi capped the scoring when Mike Richard potted his second goal of the game at 6:20 of the third period to give Mississippi a 6-2 lead.

The Mississippi power play went 4-for-7, and Bill Zaniboni made 31 saves to earn his fourth win of the season.
