As shipbuilders surged through the gate Friday morning, Aug. 9, they were met by Mississippi Surge Hockey representatives and United Way coordinators.

Hockey reps offered free game passes and Red Cross and Ingalls volunteers passed out snacks to remind employees how United Way provides valuable services to the communities that shipbuilders and the sports team call home.

"It was a pleasant surprise to see the Surge Hockey and Red Cross folks out here this early," said Philliphia McLeod, sheetmetal mechanic. "I always support the United Way, because they give back so much."

"This is our community," said Quinton McCloud, ticket coordinator for Mississippi Surge Hockey. "The Surge has partnered with United Way in the past, and this season we want to join the cause and entice employees to give a little more by offering a few free tickets."

They also reminded employees that United Way needs everyone's support to give back to the community through dozens of groups like The Red Cross and Boys and Girls Clubs.

As a company-wide goal, Ingalls hopes to raise $525,000 to support the ongoing benevolence of United Way of Jackson and George Counties, United Way of South Mississippi and United Way of Southeast Louisiana.

"When you give through United Way, 99 cents of every dollar goes to your community," said Dorothy Shaw, manager, Community Relations. "Any amount is greatly appreciated by United Way supported agencies that do so much for our neighbors and sometimes for us personally."

Other gate events are planned Aug. 23 and Sept. 13.
