January 16, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The first-place Mississippi Surge used three-point nights from star forwards Matt Zultek and Rusty Masters to upend the Augusta RiverHawks 4-1 Saturday night in Biloxi. The RiverHawks literally did not go down without a fight, as the two teams engaged in three separate fighting incidents in the second half of the second period with the Surge already up 3-0.
Surge net-minder Dan Earles picked up the win stopping 18 shots, while RiverHawks' goaltender Adam Avramenko dropped his second game of the weekend despite getting in front of 30 Surge shot attempts.
The Surge took complete control of the game during a three-minute span separated by the first intermission. Zultek scored his first of two goals with just 44 seconds left in the first period. He would score his second of the game a minute and two seconds after the puck dropped to start the second period. That was followed just 24 seconds later by a goal from teammate Jeff Grant.
The RiverHawks' lone goal was scored by defenseman Curtis Megginson who tallied his second of the season. The goal continues a hot stretch for Megginson as it was his seventh point in his past six games. Megginson had just four points the entire season up to that point.
The loss drops the RiverHawks to six points behind the Huntsville Havoc for third place in the SPHL and just two points ahead of the fifth place Columbus Cottonmouths.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 4th as they face the Columbus Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
