Mississippi Surge News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Surge got out to an early 2-0 lead but saw that cushion dissipate and then vaporize as the Fayetteville FireAntz scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 win in the first of a two-game set at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Friday evening.
Mike Richard extended his point-scoring streak to six games when Chris Greene slid a pass across the crease, and Richard, stationed at the bottom of the right circle, snapped it past Fayetteville netminder Bryan Bridges for a power-play goal at 4:45. Also extending his point-scoring streak in the first period was Tim Velemirovich, who rifled a quick shot an inch under the crossbar at 14:16 of the first to give the Surge a 2-0 lead. At 16:40, Fayetteville defenseman Phil Sbrocchi made an end-to-end rush and scored his first goal of the season to get the FireAntz on the board.
Rob Sich drew Fayetteville even with his 22nd goal of the season, converting the rebound of Lawne Snyder's shot from the point at 8:58 of the second period. Midway through the second, Sich fired through the legs of Mississippi goalie Bill Zaniboni to give the Antz a 3-2 lead at 11:53, and then capped his hat-trick with an empty-net goal at 19:04 of the third.
The Surge were 1-for-6 on the power play, and Zaniboni made 40 saves, earning a loss.
