Mississippi Surge News Release

COLUMBUS, GA -- The Mississippi Surge battled back from a two-goal deficit but ultimately fell in overtime to the Columbus Cottonmouths, who tied the teams' first-round playoff series at one with a 5-4 win courtesy of a power-play goal from Levi Lind.

Mississippi grabbed the lead just 50 seconds into the game when Jeff Grant's shot from a sharp angle eluded Columbus goalie Ian Vigier. Columbus answered back quickly, with Will Barlow scoring at 3:35 and Tim Green finding the back of the net at 6:01 to give the Cottonmouths a 2-1 lead. At 12:23, a giveaway in the Surge end while on the power play gave Sam Bowles a shorthand breakaway which he converted for a 3-1 Columbus lead.

Tom Boudreau drew Mississippi within one when he tapped the rebound of Shane Wagner's shot from the left point through Vigier's legs at the 9:12 mark of the second period.

Jack Wolgemuth tied the game for Mississippi on the power play, rifling a shot past Vigier's blocker at 3:01 of the third. Chris Ferazzoli redirected Nick Klaren's shot for a power-play goal and a 4-3 Surge lead at 13:59 of the third. With goaltender Vigier pulled for an extra attacker, Columbus' Daryl Moore ripped a shot past Zaniboni with 12 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at four-apiece.

Columbus won the game on the power play when Levi Lind's shot from the left side beat Zaniboni under the right pad at 19:02.

Bill Zaniboni made 37 saves in net for Mississippi, and the Surge were 2-for-9 on the power play.

The Surge face the Cottonmouths in Game Three of the series Thursday at the Columbus Civic Center at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Games Four and Five, if necessary, will be at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on April 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. All tickets for the game are just $5, and can be purchased by calling (228) 287-PUCK. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the games to benefit The Back Bay Mission of Biloxi.
