Mississippi Surge head coach Jeff Bes and leading scorer from last year's team, Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn, traded the hockey sticks for golf clubs recently to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The two participated Sunday in the Rock the Fairways Charity Golf Tour, presented by the Hard Rock Cafe. The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by former college basketball coach Jim Valvano who died of cancer in 1993.

"We had a great day golfing for a wonderful cause," Bes, the Southern Professional Hockey League Coach of the Year for the recently concluded season, said. He also attended the VIP Rock Star Party held at the Hard Rock Cafe Saturday night. That event featured a silent auction in which the Surge donated an autographed jersey, a Surge logo goalie mask and tickets for the upcoming season.

The Surge is working toward a goal of 700 paid season ticket deposits by May 11. At the start of the day, Wednesday, the Surge had deposits on 637 and a half season tickets (the team offers half season ticket plans).

Season tickets for the 2012-13 Surge season are available by calling the Surge at 228-287-PUCK (7825). More information is also available at www.mssurge.com.
