Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE - The Southern League announced Monday Jacksonville Suns right-handed starter Bryan Evans has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the time frame between August 26 to September 2.

The 26-year-old earned the honor after combining for 16.2 scoreless innings in his two starts for the Suns in that time frame, allowing eight hits and one walk, in addition to striking out 16. One of those outings was a nine-inning complete game shutout win on August 26 at Montgomery, when the 26-year-old yielded just two hits and a free pass, while fanning a single-game career-high nine hitters. Evans also earned the victory on September 1 versus Mississippi after relinquishing six hits and punching out seven in 7.2 scoreless frames in his final start of the 2013 campaign.

The nine-inning complete game shutout was the first thrown by a Suns pitcher since July 7, 2010, when former Jacksonville right-hander Elih Villanueva accomplished the feat against the Tennessee Smokies. In addition, Evans' 16 strikeouts in the award's time frame ranked first in the Southern League, as well as tied for fourth among all Minor Leaguers.

Evans finished the year with a 7-5 mark and 3.32 ERA (29 ER in 78.2 IP) in 21 games (11 starts) with Jacksonville. In his final eight appearances (five starts) dating back to August 1, Evans recorded a 4-2 clip and 2.41 ERA (9 ER in 33.2 IP) in that time period.

The 26-year-old becomes the seventh Suns player to be honored with a weekly award by the Southern League this year, including the third Pitcher of the Week honor. Right-hander Henderson Alvarez was named Pitcher of the Week for the span between June 24-30 while with the Suns on a Major League Rehab Assignment, in addition to left-hander Justin Nicolino (August 12-18), while outfielders Marcell Ozuna (April 22-28), Christian Yelich (May 6-12), and Kyle Jensen (June 3-9) and Danny Pertusati (August 5-11), were named Hitter of the Week.
