SunFire wins first ever overtime contest 17 to 14 in Los Angeles

San Diego Sunfire News Release

LOS ANGELES - Neither San Diego (2-0) or Los Angeles (1-1) were quite sure what to make of their week one wins due to poor matchups. San Diego's 27 to 0 victory over San Francisco was called at the half - due to injuries suffered from an undermanned and poorly organized Tsunami squad. The Lasers 66 to zero win over Arizona spoke for itself. The competition just wasn't there.

Saturday night however, was a battle between two well matched teams that went the distance and beyond. #32 Sonja Baczynski kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime to give the SunFire a 17-14 victory over the Lasers at Los Angeles Harbor Community College.

The SunFire struck first midway into the first quarter. Running backs #20 Railene Ritzberg and #33 Melissa Simmons combined on a 5 play 48 yard drive that Simmons capped off with a 3 yard touchdown run. #32 Sonja Baczynski converted the PAT for a 7 to 0 SunFire lead.

Los Angeles tied the game just a minute later, but the SunFire took the lead halfway through the second quarter when #22 Athena Reyes picked off a pass by Lasers quarterback Julie Williams and ran it back 62 yards.

Another interception by Reyes in OT set up Baczynski's game-winning kick. Los Angeles (1-1) will play San Francisco next week, while San Diego (2-0) will host the Long Beach Aftershock (1-0) at Patrick Henry Stadium.
