
SunFire rallies to overcome Aftershock

San Diego, CA October 6, 2002 -The San Diego SunFire moved to the top of its' leagues' rankings by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to beat last year's champion of the Women's American Football League, the Long Beach Aftershock. Final score 34-28 in an American Football Women's League game in front of a crowd of about 1,750 at Patrick Henry High.
San Diego's Athena Reyes intercepted a pass from Mary Margaret Montgomery at the Aftershock 47-yard line and returned it for a touchdown as time expired in the exciting victory by the SunFire (3-0).The SunFire scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Melissa Gallegos hit Carmen Cruz with a 12-yard pass and then the same two paired up on a 6-yard pass to tie the game with 3:45 left in the game.
San Diego got on the board first as Robin Leafblad returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score. Leafblad also caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Gallegos in the second quarter. Kicker Sonja Baczynski was 4-for-4 on extra points against the Aftershock (1-1).
San Diego and Long Beach both on the road next week. The SunFire travels to Arizona to take on the winless Titans, and The Aftershock will make the trip to San Francisco to battle the Tsunami.
