PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Arizona Sundogs Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro announced today the team has re-signed goaltender Doug Groenestege (pronounced GRUHN-uh-stej) for the 2010-11 season.

"We're pleased to have re-signed Doug for the upcoming 2010-11 season," said Pietroniro. "He's a proven goaltender in this league with a goals against average under three and a save percentage over nine and our club is extremely confident having him back in net."

Groenestege, 26, opened the 2009-10 season with the Missouri Mavericks before being acquired by the Sundogs in a trade that sent forward Karl Sellan to the then-expansion club.

The Stratford, Ontario, native recorded a 8-5-1 record, two shutouts, a 3.42 goals against average (GAA) and a .887 save percentage (SV%) in 17 games with the Mavericks before compiling a 10-10-3 mark, 3.40 GAA, .898 SV% and one shutout in 23 appearances with the Sundogs to close out the 2009-10 campaign.

The netminder was perfect in shootouts in 2009-10 finishing with an unblemished 8-0 mark - 4-0 with Missouri and 4-0 with Arizona. He finished tied for the league lead in shutouts (3), third among goaltenders in minutes played (2378), fourth in saves (1137) and fifth in games played (40).

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound backstop was named Oakley/CHL Goaltender of the Week while with Missouri early last season after posting back-to-back wins against the Wichita Thunder in late-October. In two contests against the Thunder, Groenestege stopped 46 of 47 shots for a 0.5 GAA and a .979 SV%.

The sixth-year pro was a finalist for the CHL's Most Outstanding Goaltender award in 2008-09 while with the Oklahoma City Blazers, finishing with a pair of shutouts, a 24-6-4 record and a league-leading 2.10 GAA. His .922 SV% ranked third among league netminders.

Groenestege becomes Arizona's first player signed for the upcoming 2010-11 season.

The Sundogs will celebrate their fifth season in the Central Hockey League beginning this October at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Season ticket packages are available for as low as $295. For more information call (928) 583-6061 or visit www.arizonasundogs.com.
