Sundogs Late Period Goals the Difference in 6-5 Win

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Lubbock Cotton Kings squared off for the second time in as many nights, both working to climb their way to the top of the tightly contested Southwest Division. The Sundogs would score late period goals in the first and second period that would prove to be the difference in the 6-5 win. Arizona's Jon Landry would collect two goals on the night while five other Sundogs would have multiple-point nights. With the win the Sundogs get back to .500 on the season with a record of 17-17-1 with 35 points, just two back of division leader Amarillo.

Arizona would open the scoring in the first period just two minutes in as Jonathan Landry would tally his third goal of the season from Martin Doyle. The lead would be short-lived as Lubbock would even the score on their first power play of the night at the 5:25 mark. Karl Sellan would be tagged with a two-minute slashing penalty in route to Lubbock's marker. Kyle Nosan would be credited with the goal on passes from Craig Minard and Philippe Lacasse. At 17:19 mark the Sundogs would convert on their second power play chance of the night as Ryan Steeves would tip a Chris Bartolone shot from the point past Lubbock netminder JF Perras from outside the right circle. Bartolone and Dmitri Leonov would be credited with the assists. Seventeen seconds later the Cotton Kings would answer back to again tie the game as Jimmy Callahan would score on a pass from Chris Barth. As the first period would come to a close Arizona would tally its second goal of the night while on the man advantage. With just 13 seconds left Bartolone would receive a cross-ice pass from Brent Kelly and would fire the puck wide to Steeves who would tip it in to take a 3-2 lead into the second period.

The Sundogs would need only 1:24 to score their fourth goal of the game to open the second period. Martin Doyle would notch his second of the season from Ryan Steeves and Chris Bartolone to give the Sundogs their biggest lead of the game. The assists would be Bartolone's and Steeves' third points of the night. At 4:44 of the second Lubbock would cut the Sundogs' lead back to one as Anders Strome would cycle through the zone squeezing a puck past netminder Chris King. The goal would be Strome's fourth in two nights against Arizona. Midway through the second the Sundogs would once again gain a two-goal lead with a Brent Kelly goal from Chris Greene. The goal would be Kelly's league-leading 27th of the season. As has been the case in the Southwest Division, the Lubbock Cotton Kings continued to keep it close as they battled back to within one as Ross McCain would score at the 17:41 mark from Corey Rutt and Lacasse. The Sundogs would skate into the third with a two goal lead as Landry would tally his second of the night with just .1 seconds left in the middle frame to make it 6-4. Greene and Sellan would collect assists on the play.

Both teams would hold each other scoreless through the third until Lubbock would pull Perras in place of an extra offensive skater. The move would prove to work as the Cotton Kings would pull to back within one on a Kyle Nosan goal from Bobby Brown and Anders Strome. That would be the end of the scoring as the Sundogs would hold for the 6-5 win.

Chris King backstopped Arizona to the win blocking 28 of 33 shots while JF Perras stopped 20 of 26. Arizona finished 2-for-4 on the power play while Lubbock finished 2-for-5 with the man advantage, Next up for the Sundogs are division rival the New Mexico Scorpions on Tuesday at the Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
