New York/New Jersey Juggernaut News Release

Stockton, Calif. – Behind a two pitch shutout by Jodie Cox, the California Sunbirds broke their recent losing streak with a 1-0 win over the NY/NJ Juggernaut, their first win over NY/NJ this season. With the win Sunbirds improve to 9-16 for the season while the Juggernaut drop to 16-10 overall.

After pitching seven strong innings last night and eight the previous game, Cox stepped into the circle and delivered one of her best pitching performances of the season, halting the Juggernaut offense, allowing only two hits. Cox, the lone healthy pitcher for the Birds has been called upon to pitch in all five of California's previous games in which she has come away with a 2-3 record.

The Sunbirds got a shot in the offensive arm in the second inning as catcher Julie Marshall blasted her second homerun of the season, a solo shot, to put the Birds on the board and eventually in the winning column. The homerun was the first run for California in 23 innings, the last run scored was the walk-off two run homerun recorded by Cindy Ball against the New England Riptide on June 28th.

Kaci Clark gave up just three hits to the Sunbirds on the night and pitched a great game despite the one pitch to Marshall in the second. In her six complete innings, Clark struck out nine while not walking any.

The Sunbirds will look to capture the series as they finish their three game series with the NY/NJ Juggernaut tomorrow, Saturday, July 3. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm.
