Sunbirds drop series with 3-0 loss to the Juggernaut

Stockton, Calif. â The California Sunbirds fell in the rubber game of their three game series versus the NY/NJ Juggernaut, losing 3-0 on Saturday, July 3. With the loss the Sunbirds drop to 9-17 for the season while the Juggernaut improve to 17-10 overall.
The Juggernaut broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning as they were able to plate three runs on three hits. Back to back singles got the Juggernaut started as Lauren Bauer laced a shot down the left field line and Lyndsey Klein legged out an infield single to short. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, NY/NJ's starting pitcher, Gina Oaks, helped herself and her team out by driving in the first run of the game on a single up the middle, a shot that squeaked past a diving Allison Andrade who was playing in to protect a run. She later dented the plate on a double to right field single by Lyndsey Collins who drove in both Oaks and Klein.
Jodie Cox, the starting pitcher for the Sunbirds for the third consecutive game, threw her 29th consecutive inning, the longest streak in National Pro Fastpitch history. Despite the extended time in the circle for California, Cox gave up only six hits in the game and the three earned runs, her first runs relinquished in over 17 innings pitched.
Even with the momentum of a win the previous night and another good performance out of Cox, the Sunbirds were unable to muster any offensive, as they were shutout for the fifth time against the Juggernaut. Over their six games this season versus NY/NJ, the Birds were outscored 16-2.
The Sunbirds hit the road for 19 days as they play 12 games on the road starting with a three game stand against the Akron Racers on July 5.
