Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - A dominant pitching performance and a pair of homeruns guided the Rochester Honkers to a 4-2 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Friday at Mayo Field.

After being held without a hit for the first 3.2 innings by Thunder Bay starting pitcher John Hayes, Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) put the Honkers in the hit column and run column with one swing of the bat as he drove his first homerun of the season over the left field fence to give the Honkers a 1-0 lead. Two pitches later, Matt Halloran (Minnesota) hit his first homerun of the season, just left of the scoreboard in right-center field. The pair of homeruns were the first back-to-back homeruns for Rochester this season.

Campbell added a second RBI on the night in the bottom of the sixth inning when his double down the left field line scored Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University.) The Honkers added a second run in the inning when Jarad Watts (Bethel University) drew a bases loaded walk to score Connor Goedert (Neosho County Community College) to give Rochester a 4-0 lead after six innings. Campbell led the Honkers offense by going 2-for-4 with a pair of extra base hits, 2 RBI, and a run scored.

Alex Bautista's homerun in the seventh inning put the Border Cats on the board. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) earned the win (1-0) in his first start of the season. He allowed one run on just three hits in seven innings of work. He struck out six batters on the night.

Thunder Bay added a run in the top of the eighth inning, but Reid Roper (Illinois) was able to hold the two-run lead as he struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season in his first appearance on the mound. Hayes took the loss for the Border Cats. He allowed four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings.

The two teams will finish the two game series on Saturday June 15 at Mayo Field at 7:05 p.m. Jon Woodcock (Crowder Junior College) is slated to make the start for Rochester (8-9.) Ryan Atwood (Florida Gulf Coast University) is scheduled to start for Thunder Bay (7-10.)
