Norfolk Nighthawks News Release
Norfolk, VA (July 9, 2002) - The Norfolk Nighthawks have welcomed back an old friend to the lineup for the remainder of the 2002 season. Offensive Specialist, and Norfolk's all-time leading scorer, Anthony Stringfield will play with the team for their final three games, including this week's home finale against Roanoke (7-7).
Stringfield played in last week's victory over Greensboro after practicing just two days with the team. He finished the game with five catches for 53 yards and scored two touchdowns. Stringfield etched his name in just about every team record there is when playing for the Nighthawks during 2000 and 2001 seasons. He holds team all-time records for receptions (195), receiving yards (2,653), receiving touchdowns (44), scoring (302 pts), all-purpose yards (4,749) and kick returns (85 for 1,691).
Stringfield returns to arenafootball2 unofficially as the league's 5th all-time receiver in yards gained and 4th in all-purpose yards. Having missed the first twelve games of 2002, he fell from 3rd and 2nd rankings, respectively, where he was at the conclusion of the 2001 season. His 2,676 all-purpose yards gained in 2001 ranks as the 7th best performance in af2 history.
The main focal point of the Norfolk offense for their first two seasons, Stringfield was taking this season off to try and get ready for NFL, CFL and AFL tryouts coming this fall. "I just wanted to see if having my body is better shape at the end of August would make a difference, " he commented in a taped interview last week at Greensboro, "I just allowed the lord to work his ways and was hoping to get a look from a higher level, but I couldn't turn down the opportunity to come back and help the people who got me started here in Norfolk, it's where my heart always was."
The only thing different about his performances now, he says, will be his number. Stringfield will be wearing #10 for the rest of this season. His old #4 jersey has been worn by WR/DB Dominic Banks in 2002. Banks wears the number to honor Kenneth Curry, a student of his at Simms Middle School (Newport News) who recently past away.
Stringfield, Norfolk's 2001 Offensive MVP, will be starting at offensive specialist when the Nighthawks face the Roanoke Steam on Saturday, July 13 at 7:00PM. Roanoke's Head Coach Steven Jerry coached Stringfield during the 2000 season when he was Norfolk's offensive coordinator.
