Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA BAY - Day five of Storm training camp saw many participants playing on both sides of the ball. With a roster of only 20 active players, versatility can be the key to success.
"They want us to be able to play both sides," said linebacker Dexter Jackson. "That's the thing about arena football, the more you can do the better it is for the team. Having guys that can play both sides is great for the team."
Some players view it as a way to make the final roster. Proving your versatility and willingness to play out of your normal position is something that could catch the eye of coaches, increasing the chances of making it out of camp.
"I'm just trying to show what I can do," said defensive back Travaun Nixon. "I'm just trying to make some plays and show the staff that I can play both sides when my number is called."
Practice ended with a lesson on discipline and holding poise. A team must have discipline and poise when faced with adversity. In a league where two penalties could mean an ejection, it is important for all players to know what is going on during the game at all times.
This was something echoed by the players.
"Discipline is vital to success," said wide receiver Tyrece Gaines. "On offense we're always looking to execute and you cannot execute without discipline."
Coaches Perspective: On teaching football fundamentals and getting back to the basics, defensive coordinator Chris Hovan said, "We're trying to get back to the fundamentals and that is the great thing about training camp. No matter who is working with the players on tackling or sled work it is all a concerted effort to get these guys better."
Quote of the Day: On being disciplined in all aspects of the game, head coach Lawrence Samuels said, "Discipline is one of the keys to winning games. We need you all to be disciplined if we are going to win. We want to be the most disciplined team out there."
Player Spotlight: This past offseason the Storm made it a priority to bolster the offensive line. The o-line needs its leader and the team brought in Raymond McNeil to fill that role this past fall. McNeil is a three-year veteran of the AFL, having played with the Utah Blaze and Spokane Shock in 2011, and the San Jose SaberCats in 2012. McNeil also played in the af2 where he earned First Team All-af2 honors as a member of the Green Bay Blizzard in 2008 and Milwaukee Iron in 2009. Look for him to use his veteran experience to help protect the quarterback in the upcoming season.
Looking Forward: The Storm will have a day off from training camp tomorrow with the team resuming practice on Wednesday, February 26 at 8:15 AM at Skyway Park.
